Highmark/Chamber Golf Classic Tees-Off Today
The 2013 Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Chamber Golf Classic tees-off today at noon at Iron Masters Country Club in Ore Hill. As of last Friday, 143 golfers have registered to play. For the second consecutive year, the event features a ball drop, coordinated through Pine Bottom Aviation Services of Martinsburg. Tickets for the Ball Drop can be purchased at the event for just $5.00 each. The ball drop takes place immediately following the conclusion of the golfing round.
Blair Business Mirror to be Published Tuesday
The Blair Business Mirror will be published tomorrow as a supplement to the Altoona Mirror. The cover feature of this issue will focus on the physical therapy companies in the Chamber membership and the potential challenges that they face with the onset of Obamacare. Inside features include a look at a Tyrone business that has developed a program to help companies to reduce their HIPAA liabilities and a Q&A feature on George Ferris of Carnegie Equipment. A copy of the Blair Business Mirror will be mailed to all Chamber Member businesses by the end of next week.
Chamber Board to Consider Altoona Regional Request
When the Blair County Chamber’s Board of Directors meets on Thursday, one agenda item that the board will be asked to consider is sending a letter of support from the organization for Altoona Regional Health System’s affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). The Board meets at 7:30 p.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. To bring an issue to the Board, contact Joe Hurd at 943-8151.
“Role Models” Program is Thursday at the Convention Center
The Blair County Chamber’s “Role Models” program will be held this Thursday, May 16th from noon until 1:30 p.m. at the Blair County Convention Center. Ann Benzel of Benzel’s Bretzel Bakery in Altoona and Joe DelGrosso of DelGrosso Foods in Tipton will be the featured business leaders who will participate in the Q&A format. The cost to attend Role Models is $25 for Chamber Members and $40 for non-members. Lunch is included. To register, call The Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.
Leadership Blair County Invites Potential Class Members to Event
If you or someone in your business is interested in learning more about The Chamber’s Leadership Blair County program, that opportunity will come your way this Thursday, May 16th from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the boardroom at the Devorris Center for Business Development. An Open House will be held that will provide you the opportunity to talk to LBC alumni in a relaxed environment. Enjoy some munchies and beverages and hear about the many great things that LBC has meant to the local community. There is no cost to attend and no pressure to apply to the program. GRYP to Host Lunch 'n' Learn Wednesday
The Chamber’s Growth and Relationships of Young Professionals (GRYP) will hold a Lunch ‘n’ Learn program on Wednesday, May 15th from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Hoss’s Steak & Sea House in Duncansville. The program is entitled, “Making Your Home Here.” Featured Speaker is Susan Barber of Reliance Bank. Attendees will learn the ins and outs of securing a mortgage, maintaining good credit, budget basics and shopping for that perfect home. The cost to attend is $22 for GRYP & Chamber Members, $30 for non-members and $17 each when three or more people from the same Chamber-member business attend. Sustainability Tour Scheduled for Altoona Lung Specialists
Altoona Lung Specialists, located at 800 Chestnut Avenue in Downtown Altoona, is one of the region’s most environmentally prudent business models. For that reason, The Chamber’s Coalition on Sustainability will conduct a tour of that facility this Friday beginning at 1:30 p.m. Any Chamber Member is invited to be part of the tour and there is no cost to participate. “Backbone Bash” is Friday at the Buccinese Club
The “Backbone Bash” has traditionally been the premier social event for small business members of the Blair County Chamber. It still is. This year’s Backbone Bash is scheduled for this Friday, May 17th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Buccinese Society located at 614 8th Avenue in Altoona. The $10 admission for the event features music, karaoke, dozens of door prizes, great Italian food, spirited and non-spirited beverages, bocce and much more. Missed the Meeting for Chamber’s London Trip? Catch the Next One!
On April 30th, The Chamber hosted an informational meeting on its upcoming trip to London (October 26 to November 2). The trip, priced at just $2,299/person (including airfare), is an opportunity that even the most experienced international travelers won’t be in a hurry to pass-up. The Chamber has partnered with Heritage Travel of Altoona and Chamber Discoveries in offering the trip. If you missed that meeting, there’s no reason to panic. Another informational meeting on the trip will be held on Monday, June 3rd at 6:00 p.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. The Blair County Chamber recognizes the importance of supporting the men and women in our armed services. For that reason, The Chamber encourages its member businesses to support them as well. Registration Continues for Business Excellence Dinner
The Chamber’s Annual Business Excellence Dinner, honoring Ben Stapelfeld of New Pig Corporation, will be held on Monday, June 17th at The Casino at Lakemont Park. The event begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:45. Reservations can be made by calling The Chamber at 943-8151 or register online. Stapelfeld will be the twelfth recipient of the prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award for Business Excellence.” Previous recipients of the award are: Ernie Wissinger (2002), G.
