Chamber Office Closed for Presidents Day
The Blair County Chamber Office will be closed on Monday in recognition of Presidents Day. The office will re-open on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. To access Chamber information or to register for a program or event, visit the Chamber Website.

Informational Meeting for Presidents’ Forum Set for Tomorrow
An informational meeting on the Blair County Chamber’s Presidents’ Forum program will be held tomorrow, February 17th at 8:30 a.m. at the Devorris Center. Anyone in a top administrative position at a Chamber-member business is invited to attend the meeting to learn more about the Presidents’ Forum. Direct any questions to Joe Hurd at 943-8151.

Chamber’s “Five Rivers” Cruise Meeting Scheduled for Tuesday
The Blair County Chamber is heading to Europe in late Fall for its first-ever river cruise. The cruise is being done in cooperation with Heritage Adventures Travel Agency. The special wine-themed “5-River European Cruise” will depart from the Chamber Office in the Devorris Center for Business Development on November 3rd, will fly from Dulles International Airport for an overnight flight to Prague and will return on November 13th from Paris. The trip will include one-night sightseeing stays at 5-star hotels in both Prague and Paris with the river cruise in-between. The Chamber trip will feature excursions on the Vistava, Main, Rhine, Moselle and Seine rivers via Avalon Waterways “Visionary,” considered the finest river vessel in Europe. The Visionary accommodates just 128 guests. Brochures on the 5-River European Cruise will be available at the Chamber Office. A special informational meeting on the cruise will be held on Tuesday, February 17th at 6:00 p.m. at the Devorris Center. Anyone planning to attend should call The Chamber at 943-8151.

Chamber Board Meeting to Include Transportation Discussion
When the Blair County Chamber’s Board of Directors meets this Wednesday beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Devorris Center, one point of discussion will involve The Chamber’s role in promoting a federal transportation bill. Congressman Bill Shuster, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, will address the Board concerning the bill. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is encouraging The Chamber to draft a resolution supporting a long-term bill that would include an increase in the fuels tax, something Shuster has indicated lacks sufficient support for passage. For more information on the Chamber’s Transportation effort, contact Joe Hurd at 943-8151 or email him.

Business Excellence Award Nominations Invited
The fourteenth recipient of the Blair County Chamber’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Business Excellence will be honored at the Business Excellence Dinner on June 15th. Who that recipient is will be largely determined from nominations received from within the Chamber membership. “Each year, we receive many nominations for business people who all meet the criteria for excellence,” explained Chamber Board Chair Carol Gensimore of Value Drug Company. “Our selection committee weighs the information and recommends a candidate. The more information that a nominator provides, the better chance that candidate has for selection. “Sometimes people just submit a name with little or no documentation. That very seldom makes a positive difference for that candidate unless others have recommended them as well and provided reasons why they deserve consideration. In other words, if you’re taking the time to nominate someone, make sure the selection committee knows why.” Nomination forms are available by calling The Chamber at 943-8151 or can be downloaded by clicking here.  Previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award are: Ernie Wissinger (2002), G. William Ward (2003), Stephen Sheetz (2004), Donald Devorris (2005), Willard Campbell (2006), John Wolf (2007), Lee Hite (2008), Donald Detwiler (2009), Michael McLanahan (2010), Barry Smith (2011), Fred Imler (2012), Ben Stapelfeld (2013) and William Thompson, Jr. (2014). For sponsorship information or to make reservations for the Business Excellence Dinner, contact The Chamber at 943-8151.

Safety Program to Focus on How to Manage a Safety Committee
Learn ways to manage an effective safety committee in your organization at the next Blair County Chamber of Commerce safety program set for Friday, February 27th from 7:30-9:30 a.m., at Hoss’s in Duncansville. The program will be presented by Barbara Hoover, workers compensation specialist at Teeter Group and Caleb Moses, environmental, health and safety director at Curry Supply Company. When managed successfully, a safety committee can be the best resource for a business to reduce workplace injuries, increase safety awareness among employees and provide a safe work environment. Join a best practices discussion on organizing an effective safety committee, managing a centralized committee for multiple locations and getting your committee certified in the State of PA. The cost to attend the Safety Program is $20 for Chamber Members and $30 for non-members. The cost includes a full breakfast buffet. To register, call the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.
