Blair Business Mirror to Be Published Tuesday
The next issue of the Blair Business Mirror will be published on Tuesday as a supplement to the Altoona Mirror. The cover story will highlight the local organizations that are members of The Chamber and which help to feed the area’s hungry, particularly during the holiday season. Other stories in this issue include Envision Laser Centers, Global Live Line and Always a Party Rentals. Copies of the Blair Business Mirror will be mailed to each member-business by the end of the week.

Breakfast Club Presentation to Focus of Overtime Law
Even though the Department of Labor’s new rules regarding overtime payment to employees may not face the aggressive implementation date originally predicted, smart employers will begin preparing now, according to the local attorney that will be the keynote speaker at the next Blair County Chamber’s monthly “Breakfast Club.” Attorney David Pertile, a partner at Hippo, Fleming & Pertile, will explain which employees will be eligible for overtime under the new rules, what changes are proposed for White Collar Exemptions, what minimum salaries will be required for management employees and how to stay in compliance with the law after the new rules take effect. The Chamber Breakfast Club begins at 7:45 a.m. on December 10th at The Casino at Lakemont Park. The cost to attend is $18 for Chamber Members and $30 for non-members. A full breakfast is included. To register, call The Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online. Corporate sponsor of the December Breakfast Club is Altoona Mirror.

Nomination Period Opens for Annual Meeting Awards
When an organization like the Blair County Chamber accomplishes as much as it does during the course of a year, there are undoubtedly a lot of people that make that happen. Between now and December 31st, Chamber members have an opportunity to nominate those deserving recipients for a variety of awards that will be presented at the Chamber’s Annual Meeting & Award Presentation on January 29th at The Casino at Lakemont Park.  Those awards are: the Athena Award, sponsored by First Commonwealth Bank; the Donna D. Gority Servant Leader Award, sponsored by Reliance Bank; the George Award, sponsored by Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries; the Joseph P. Rosenhamer Chamber Spirit Award, sponsored by P. Joseph Lehman, Inc. and Small Business Person of the Year, sponsored by First National Bank.  As in past years, the award recipients will not be announced prior to the event so that honorees can be surprised.  Members can access nomination forms either by calling The Chamber at 943-8151 or click here. There are also excellent sponsorship opportunities available for the Annual Meeting itself. Call Jessie Covert at 943-8151 or email her at jcovert@blairchamber.com. The cost to attend the Annual Meeting & Awards Presentation, which begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends by 9:30 is $23/person.  Call The Chamber to register or register online.

Penn State Altoona Student Showcase is Friday
Penn State Altoona will hold its semi-annual Business and Engineering Student Showcase this Friday, December 11th at the Devorris Downtown Conference Center.  Once again, the Blair County Chamber, along with the Altoona-Blair County Development Corporation and Catalyst Space, will partner with Penn State Altoona on the event.  The showcase will begin with a welcome at 8:45 a.m., followed by student presentations from 9:00 a.m. until either 3:00 or 5:00 p.m., depending on the number of presenters.  A networking lunch will take place from noon till 12:40 p.m. at the Heritage Discovery Center, located next door.  The showcase will show, firsthand, how Penn State students are using knowledge from the classroom to enhance many operations, products and services at Blair County businesses and organizations.  Students will make presentations in the areas of business, electro-mechanical engineering technology and security and risk analysis.  A complete schedule of the event’s presentations may be found at Altoona.psu.edu/student showcase.  The Hite Company is the title sponsor of the Student Showcase.  There is no cost to attend the Student Showcase by registration is necessary. Call Judy Paul by December 9th at (814) 940-3400 or email her at JAP24@psu.edu.

Sapphire9 to Host December’s “Business After Hours”
The Chamber's December Business After Hours will be held on December 17th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Sapphire9, located at 225 Allegheny Street, Hollidaysburg. Enjoy an evening of networking. Cost to attend is $6 for Chamber Members pre-registered and $12 for Non-Members pre-registered. Call The Chamber today to make a reservation or register online.

Signed-Up for The Chamber’s Trip to China Yet?
Registration continues for the 2016 Chamber Trip to China. The nine-day excursion will take place from April 7-16, 2016 and will once again be conducted through Citslinc. The price remains incredible at $2199 (including flights, meals and all accommodations at 5-star hotels.) The only significant change from the three previous Chamber trips is that the flight originates at Dulles Airport instead of JFK – a real plus to local travelers. Travel to Dulles from Altoona and back is included as part of the trip. For more information, call The Chamber at (814) 943-8151.

Registration Continues for Chamber Trip to Germany
If an April trip to China doesn’t satisfy your travel needs, have we got a deal for you! From September 18-29, the Blair County Chamber and Classic Travel will offer a 12-day, fully escorted trip to Germany. The trip covers Germany’s most famous cities, includes a day cruise on the Rhine River and also takes place during Oktoberfest.  For further information, call The Chamber at 943-8151.
