No Business Bulletin Next Monday
The Blair County Chamber publishes the Business Bulletin each Monday except for the first week of July and the last week of December. So there will be no Business Bulletin next Monday. The next Business Bulletin will be published on January 4, 2016.

Fiore, Lewis, Mearkle are Chamber Board Chair Appointments
Carol Gensimore, the Blair County Chamber’s Chairman of the Board, has appointed three Chamber members to one-year Board terms. The three are: Richard Fiore, Jr. of Leonard S. Fiore, Inc; Todd Lewis of Shoe Fly Stores; and Amy Mearkle of DelGrosso’s Amusement Park.

Beyer Added to the Chamber Board
John Beyer, Jr. of C&G Savings Bank has been approved by the Chamber’s Board of Directors to replace Andrew Ritchey as a board member. Ritchey resigned his position in November. Beyer has been active within The Chamber, having chaired the BASICS Committee and been a participant in Regional BASICS. He will officially begin his duties in January.

Chamber Board Approves Five New Members
At its December 17th meeting, the Blair County Chamber’s Board of Directors approved the following new members: Clarion Inn & Suites of Altoona; Corny’s Professional Cleaning Service; DC Ventre and Sons, Inc.; DePiro Entertainment, LLC; and Friedman Electric.

Annual Meeting Award Nominations Being Accepted
When an organization like the Blair County Chamber accomplishes as much as it does during the course of a year, there are undoubtedly a lot of people that make that happen. Between now and January 4th, Chamber members have an opportunity to nominate those deserving recipients for a variety of awards that will be presented at the Chamber’s Annual Meeting & Award Presentation on January 29th at The Casino at Lakemont Park. Those awards are: the Athena Award, sponsored by First Commonwealth Bank; the Donna D. Gority Servant Leader Award, sponsored by Reliance Bank; the George Award, sponsored by Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries; the Joseph P. Rosenhamer Chamber Spirit Award, sponsored by P. Joseph Lehman, Inc. and Small Business Person of the Year, sponsored by First National Bank. As in past years, the award recipients will not be announced prior to the event so that honorees can be surprised. Members can access nomination forms either by calling The Chamber at 943-8151 or click here. There are also excellent sponsorship opportunities available for the Annual Meeting itself. Call Jessie Covert at 943-8151 or email her at jcovert@blairchamber.com. The cost to attend the Annual Meeting & Awards Presentation, which begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends by 9:30 is $23/person.  Call The Chamber to register or register online.

“Issues” Program on Higher Education Continues This Week
The Blair County Chamber’s most recent “Issues” program is being shown on Altoona Public Access Channel throughout the month of December and into early January. The program is entitled, “The Role of Higher Education in Regional Development.”  The one hour program is moderated by Carolyn Donaldson of WTAJ-TV. The panel consists of Dr. Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry, Chancellor of Penn State Altoona, Dr. Thomas Foley, President of Mount Aloysius College, Father Malachi Van Tassell, T.O.R., President of Saint Francis University, Dr. James Troha, President of Juniata College and Dr. Walter Asonevich, President of Pennsylvania Highlands Community College. Airing times for “Issues” are every Monday at 9:00 p.m. and every Tuesday at 11:00 a.m.  Sponsors of the Issues program are: Andrews & Beard Law Offices, Keller Engineers, Salon Professional Academy and Sheetz, Inc.

Chamber Members Invited to Question the Commissioners
The Blair County Commissioners will be the guest speakers at The Chamber’s next “Breakfast Club” on January 14th beginning at 7:45 a.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park. The format for the program will be strictly Q&A with Richard Fiore, Jr., chair of the Legislative Action Committee, posing questions submitted from Chamber members. If you’d like to submit a question, email it to Joe Hurd at jhurd@blairchamber.com by no later than January 6, 2016.

Registered Yet for Chamber Trip to Germany?
From September 18-29, 2016, the Blair County Chamber and Classic Travel will offer a 12-day, fully escorted trip to Germany. The trip covers Germany’s most famous cities, includes a day cruise on the Rhine River and also takes place during Oktoberfest. For further information, call The Chamber at 943-8151.

Chamber Signs-on to Letter to the Governor, General Assembly
The Blair County Chamber of Commerce, as a member of CompetePA, has signed-on to a letter to Governor Tom Wolf and members of the PA General Assembly encouraging them not to impose a statewide business privilege tax, an incorporation filing tax or any other similar punitive tax on the business community. “It is already extremely difficult to recruit businesses to the Commonwealth without adding to the problem by creating more reasons to avoid us,” explained Chamber President Joe Hurd. Pennsylvania currently ranks 46th out of 50 states in the Tax Foundation’s annual index that rates states from lowest to highest in overall taxation. “As you can see,” Hurd noted, “we’re already one of the worst.”
