Twenty-two to Graduate Tomorrow in First YEA! Class
The first-ever class of the Chamber’s Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) program will graduate on Tuesday in ceremonies being held at the Blair County Convention Center. Those ceremonies begin at 6:00 p.m. The 30-week YEA! program helped twenty-two young people from Blair County to understand how to build a business. A panel of investors assisted in the process by funding various aspects of those businesses. The recruiting effort for the 2017-18 class has begun.  Anyone interested in being considered for that class should contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151.

Senator Eichelberger to Address Executive Roundtable
The Blair County Chamber’s Executive Roundtable will welcome State Senator John Eichelberger as its guest speaker when it meets on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. at The Blairmont Club. Eichelberger will talk about the challenges related to the State Budget and will also predict what might be on the horizon for business in the Commonwealth. For more information on the Executive Roundtable, contact Joe Hurd at (814) 943-8151 or email him at jhurd@blairchamber.com.

Chamber Board Meeting Precursor to Membership Recruitment Drive
The Blair County Chamber’s Board of Directors will meet Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. Following the meeting, several board members and Chamber Ambassadors will personally visit non-member businesses, hoping to begin conversations that will lead to Chamber membership. Board members unable to make personal visits will make contact by email. The Chamber hopes to boost its membership numbers to 1,100 by the end of 2017.

Young Professionals to Hold Networking Event in Downtown Altoona
The Chamber’s Young Professionals of Blair County will hold an early-morning networking event next Monday, May 22nd, from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. at The Clay Cup, located at 1304 Eleventh Avenue in Altoona. All attendees will be entered to win a $25.00 gift card to The Clay Cup as well as one of their super soft, amazing water color print t-shirts. There is no cost to attend but registration is encouraged. To register, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online.

Sign-Up Period Underway for Chamber Trip to China
The Chamber will travel to China from April 20-28, 2018 with Citslinc, the company that has offered trips through chambers of commerce since 1995. Last year more than 20,000 people traveled to China on trips sponsored by chambers in the United States and Canada. The trip features stays in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou – all in 4 and 5 star hotels. It includes three meals a day, deluxe bus tours, fluent English-speaking tour guides and entrance fees for all attractions. The price of $2,299/person includes bus transportation to and from Dulles Airport, roundtrip flight on either Air China or China Eastern Airlines, all accommodations and all meals. The Chamber held an informational meeting about the trip on May 10th and will hold an additional meeting in the Fall. Anyone interested in acquiring information or registering for the trip should contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151.

Chamber Safety Committee Featuring “Breakfast and a Show”
In somewhat of a departure from its usual format for educational programming, the Blair County Chamber’s Safety Committee will be offering a “Breakfast and a Show” that will focus on different aspects of the Workers’ Compensation life cycle. Cleverly entitled, “As the Claim Turns,” this safety soap opera will be moderated by Barbara Hoover, Workers’ Comp Specialist at Teeter Group, who will highlight key points as the case unfolds from the point of injury through root cause analysis and preventative action steps. Local occupational health provider Allison Marinak from HealthForce and physical therapist Lori Seiler from Phoenix Rehab Altoona-Bellmeade Clinic will assist in the evaluation of the medical and return-to-work aspects of the claim. And the audience will assist the injured worker as witnesses to the injury. “It will be educational but also a whole lot of fun,” Hoover pointed out. The program will be held on May 24th at Hoss’s in Duncansville from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. The cost to attend is $20 for Chamber members and $30 for non-members. A buffet breakfast is included. To register, call the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.

Strategic Planning to Be Part of LBC Session 8
The Chamber’s Leadership Adult Class will have its 8th educational session on Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Fairfield Inn and Suites. The session will begin with class members completing mini-projects within the community and then participating in a strategic planning exercise that will focus on the future needs of the county.  For more information on the Leadership Blair County program, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or visit the Chamber Website at www.blairchamber.com.

Chamber Check-Up a Perfect Way for Members to Learn About the Chamber
For a Chamber-member business to take full advantage of its membership, it’s important for the people at that business to know and understand what the Chamber does, what it offers and how members can access those benefits. To help provide that information, the Chamber offers a program called “Chamber Check-Up,” a one-hour tutorial for members to hear an overview of benefits to help their business. There is also sufficient time to ask questions of Chamber staff. The next Chamber Check-Up is scheduled for Wednesday, May 31st at 8:00 a.m. at the Chamber Office, located in the Devorris Center for Business Development. If you or other employees would like to attend, just call the Chamber at (814) 943-8151. There is no cost or obligation.

Registrations Continue for Business Excellence Dinner
The Blair County Chamber’s Business Excellence Dinner, honoring Harry Sickler, takes place on Monday, June 12th at The Casino at Lakemont Park beginning with a reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:45. The agenda for the evening will consist of a trio of Sickler’s friends, business acquaintances and confidants sharing stories (5 minutes each) that speak to the quality and professionalism of the man.  Those testimonials will come from Randy Tarpey, Sickler’s business partner at Sickler, Tarpey & Associates; former Tyrone Area School District Superintendent Dr. William Miller; and former State Agriculture Secretary Sam Hayes. There will also be a special tribute to Sickler and his many years of servant leadership. Jim Gregory will be master of ceremonies for the dinner. Reservations are being accepted for the Business Excellence Dinner. Call The Chamber at 943-8151 to make those reservations or register online. Dinner sponsorships (bronze only!) can also be secured by calling Jessie Covert at the Chamber Office or by emailing her at jcovert@blairchamber.com.
