Chamber Executive Committee Approves Eight New Members
At its August 22nd meeting, the Executive Committee of the Blair County Chamber approved the following eight new members to the organization: 1400 WWGE of Johnstown, Delaney Insurance of Martinsburg, Eastern Cambria County Chamber of Commerce of Cresson, Fox Hollow Boutique of Altoona, Bryan Hollenbach (retired) of Altoona, Holy Trinity Catholic School of Altoona, Howard Hanna Johnston Realty Services of Altoona, and Mike Kunko State Farm of Altoona.

Membership Categories Added to Chamber Dues Structure
The Executive Committee of the Blair County Chamber approved three new categories to the organization’s dues structure. Individuals who are not among the top level of a business’s hierarchy can now join the Chamber for an annual fee of $75. Blair County farms can join for $150/year.  Government agencies or municipalities are still charged at the non-profit rate but affiliated agencies are not included in those memberships and must join separately.

Deadline is Friday to Nominate for Chamber’s ACE Award
The Blair County Chamber of Commerce is continuing to accept nominations for the Agricultural Community Excellence (ACE) Award. This award will be presented at the annual Farm-City Dinner held in the fall. To nominate, visit the Chamber Website at www.blairchamber.com or call Stacy Hoover at (814) 943-8151. Deadline for nominations is this Friday, September 1, 2017.

Judge Kopriva to Speak at September “Breakfast Club”
Judge Jolene Kopriva will be the keynote speaker at the next Chamber “Breakfast Club,” to be held on September 14th beginning at 7:45 a.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park. Judge Kopriva, who will retire this year, will talk about her strong relationship within the business community and the many challenges and opportunities that she sees ahead, particularly pertaining to young people. She currently chairs a task force aimed at reducing truancy in local schools. The cost to attend Breakfast Club is $20 for Chamber Members and $30 for non-members. To register, call the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online. Corporate sponsor of the September Breakfast Club is Leonard S. Fiore, Inc.

Non-Profit Committee to Hold Networking Event
The Chamber’s Committee of Non-Profit Businesses will hold a networking event from 4:30 to 6:30 on September 12th at the Buccinese Club in Altoona. The event, entitled “Business, Bocce and a Great Buffet,” will be true to its title. “We’ll provide a great forum for non-profits to relax, enjoy a great meal and have some fun in a non-threatening environment,” acknowledged Maria Brandt, who chairs the committee. The cost to attend is just $15 for Chamber Members and $20 for non-members. The event will also include a cash bar and the opportunity to use the Buccinese Club’s bocce courts. To register for the event, contact the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online. Corporate sponsors are AMTRAN and The Casino at Lakemont Park.

Safety Committee, YEA! Get New Committee Chairs
Two Chamber committees will have new leadership, effective August 22nd. Lynn Gardini of Home Helpers replaces Barbara Hoover Smith as chair of the Safety Committee; Carol Gensimore of Value Drug Company replaces Thad Will as chair of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) Steering Committee. Both Smith and Will will remain as members of their committees.

Chamber Offering Digital Advertising Opportunities
As more and more people (both members and non-members) read the Business Bulletin and visit the Chamber Website, the opportunity to advertise on those two information sources has become available. And at a very reasonable cost! To have a banner advertisement on the Business Bulletin is just $200 for four weeks. A Website banner ad for four weeks is just $125. If you’re interested, contact Jessie Covert at the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or email her at jcovert@blairchamber.com.

Leadership Alumni Holding Basket of Hope Drive
Leadership Blair County Alumni will once again be hosting the Basket of Hope Drive through August 31st. LBC Alumni will be accepting donations or gift cards to retailers, grocery stores, Sheetz gas cards, and Amtran bus passes. Donations will enable Family Services staff to purchase items that are desperately needed for families. Bring or send donations to: Blair County Chamber of Commerce, 3900 Industrial Park Drive, Altoona, PA, 16602.

Chamber Schedules Informational Meeting on China Trip
Michael McLanahan, who traveled on the Blair County Chamber’s first-ever trip to China in 2011, will be the speaker at the informational meeting for the next China Trip. That meeting will be held on September 13th at 6:00 p.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. The trip, April 20-28, 2018, features stays in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou – all in 4 and 5 star hotels. It includes three meals a day, deluxe bus tours, fluent English-speaking tour guides and entrance fees for all attractions. The price of $2,299/person includes bus transportation to and from Dulles Airport, roundtrip flight on either Air China or China Eastern Airlines, all accommodations and all meals. Anyone interested in acquiring information or registering for the trip should contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151.

Young Entrepreneurs Academy Recruiting Second Class of Students
Applications continue to be accepted for the second class of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) program. The program will begin in late October and run until next April (25 weeks). YEA! is seeking Blair County school students in grades 6-12 who are interested in starting an actual business. To apply, visit the Chamber Website at www.blairchamber.com.

Chamber Members Can Get Additional Online Directory Listings
The Blair County Chamber’s Online Membership Directory is a popular destination for people inside and outside the county to access information on Chamber members. One change to that directory will take place in January. All Chamber members will receive a free listing in whatever business category that they feel is most advantageous to them. If they’d like to purchase additional listings, they can do so for $25/year. Adding those listings, however, must take place before November 1st. To add a listing(s), contact Cindy Cessna at the Chamber (814-943-8151) or email her at ccessna@blairchamber.com. Remember, this is for the Online Directory only. The printed directory also has additional listing opportunities. Those, however, must be done through Barash Media at (814) 238-5051.

Committee Participation? Great Opportunities Exist at the Chamber
The Blair County Chamber currently has twenty-eight committees, subcommittees and roundtable groups. All of them target issues of importance to the business community. Anyone interested in participating on a committee, subcommittee or roundtable group should contact Joe Hurd at 943-8151 or email him at jhurd@blairchamber.com. Don’t know what committees are available? Click here to view the list.

Save the Date: Backbone Bash
The Chamber’s Backbone Bash is set for Wednesday, October 11th from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Park Hills Golf Club. The event, which is geared to small businesses (the “backbone” of the local economy) will feature a casual cookout, beverages, music, karaoke, backyard games and hourly door prizes including a fantastic grand prize – all for just a $10 admission price.  To make a reservation, call the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.
