Business Hall of Fame Dinner is Tonight at the Convention Center
The 2017 Business Hall of Fame and Awards of Distinction dinner will be held tonight, October 16th, at the Blair County Convention Center.  The reception begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 6:45. This year’s Hall of Fame inductees are: Coldwell Banker Town & Country Real Estate, Jeff Long Construction, Keller Engineers and Penn-Mont Academy. Altoona Candy and Tobacco Company is the Heritage Hall of Fame honoree. In the category of General Business Awards, the honorees in Young Emerging Business are Charlotte’s Trove, LLC and Penn Stress. The Salon Professional Academy will be the sole honoree in Excellence in Small Business. Blair Companies and J.C. Orr & Son will be honored for Safety Excellence; P. Joseph Lehman, Inc. for Community Service. The Committee Choice Award goes to Altoona Symphony Orchestra.
 

Workers’ Comp Presentation to Feature Local Attorney
This Wednesday, October 18th at The Casino at Lakemont Park, the Blair County Chamber’s Safety Committee partners with the Human Resources Management Association on a program entitled, “Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About Workers’ Compensation But Were Afraid to Ask.”  Presenter is Attorney Mike Wagner of Wagner & Finn Law Offices. Registration and breakfast for the Workers’ Comp program begins at 7:45 a.m. and the program concludes at 10:00 a.m. The cost to attend the program is $20 for Chamber members and $30 for non-members. To register, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online. 
 
Chamber Board of Directors to Meet Thursday
The Blair County Chamber’s Board of Directors will meet on Thursday beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. The agenda will include a recap of a series of meetings with Chamber Committee Chairs, held to gain insight on challenges related to committee operation and interaction. The Board will also be updated on several new programs that the organization is unveiling this fall. Any Chamber Member who would like to address the Board should contact Joe Hurd by noon tomorrow. His number is (814) 943-8151 or you can email him at jhurd@blairchamber.com.
 
“Business After Hours” to Be Hosted by New Hotels
The next Blair County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours will be held this Thursday, October 19th, from 5 -7 p.m. at  the Fairfield Inn & Suites/ TownePlace Suites by Marriott Altoona located at 2915 Pleasant Valley Blvd. Door prizes, food and beverages will be provided. Fairfield Inn & Suites and TownePlace Suites by Marriott Altoona are a unique 197 room blended Marriott brand property which meets the needs of a wide variety of guests. The Fairfield Inn & Suites features 104 guest rooms, great for business travel, sports events and social event weekends. The TownePlace Suites features 93 purpose-built long term stay rooms with full kitchens for those on a long project or relocating to the area. Both brands feature a hot breakfast buffet included with your stay. Additional amenities include an indoor pool, fitness center and large outdoor patio with fire pit and grills. Chamber Endorses Transportation Study to Enhance Downtown
The Executive Committee of the Blair County Chamber has signed-on to a recommendation by the Chamber’s Transportation Committee that would endorse a transportation study aimed at helping to promote growth in Downtown Altoona. The request to fund the study will be forwarded to the Blair County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to finalize a scope of work and to apply for Supplemental Transit Studies Funding from PennDOT as part of the 2018-20 Unified Planning Work Program.
 

History, Culture and Heritage is LBC’s First Adult Session
The first session of the 2017-18 Leadership Blair County Adult Class will be held this Friday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Trolley Works. The session will focus on the history, culture and heritage of Blair County.  The class will be divided into four groups. One group will tour historical sites in Downtown Altoona, one will visit sites in Southern Blair County a third will visit sites in Northern Blair County and the fourth will travel to Hollidaysburg to visit sites there. The groups will return to Trolley Works at 3:00 p.m. to prepare presentations that will describe the day. For more information on Leadership Blair County, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or visit the Chamber Website.
 

Chamber’s Young Professionals to Host Workshop on Investment
The Young Professionals of Blair County will hold a Lunch ’n’ Learn on October 25th from noon until 1:00 p.m. at Altoona Grand Hotel. The workshop, entitled “Investing in Your Future,” will focus on ways that young professionals can learn how to make smarter decisions with their money. Keynote Speaker will be Drew Wetzel, financial advisor  for Stifel Investment Services. Wetzel’s presentation will include steps to take in order to be financially independent, strategies to make your savings work harder, an overview of major asset classes, an explanation of different investment options and the risk/reward associated with them and the rules of successful investing. A short Q&A session will follow the presentation. Stifel Investment Services is also the corporate sponsor of the Lunch ’n’ Learn. The cost to attend is $15/person and includes a buffet lunch. To register, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online.
 
Chamber’s China Trip Continues to Have Strong Local Appeal
The Blair County Chamber is traveling to China for the fifth time in eight years. People in the area continue to regard it as their favorite destination. The trip, April 20-28, 2018, features stays in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou – all in 4 and 5 star hotels. It includes three meals a day, deluxe bus tours, fluent English-speaking tour guides and entrance fees for all attractions. The price of $2,299/person includes bus transportation to and from Dulles Airport, roundtrip flight on either Air China or China Eastern Airlines, all accommodations and all meals. Anyone interested in acquiring information or registering for the trip should contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151.
 
Registrations Continue for “The Best Day You’ve Ever Had”
The Blair County Chamber’s Committee of Non-Profit Businesses, in partnership with the Association for Fundraising Professionals (PA Allegheny Mountains Chapter) will hold a special educational and networking event on November 9th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park. Entitled, “The Best Day You’ve Ever Had,” the event will provide inspiration, invigoration and revitalization for a healthy non-profit. The keynote speaker will be Michael Kumer from Pittsburgh, Principal of Boards MTO. The cost to attend is $35 for Chamber Members and $40 for non-Chamber Members. Businesses that register three or more people can attend for $25 (member) and $30 (non-member) as long as all registrations are made at the same time.
