Welcome to “Career Shadowing Week”
One of Blair County’s most important programs to help students to gain first-hand experience in a workplace environment will kick-off today.  Career Shadowing Week, a program of the Blair County Chamber’s BASICS initiative, will be held all this week at businesses throughout the county. This year, 418 students will participate. “It’s been a remarkable program,” acknowledged BASICS Committee Co-Chair Leslie Estep. “Career Shadowing is a win-win for students and businesses.  It’s an essential component of any effort aimed at career development.” All high school juniors in Blair County are eligible to participate in Career Shadowing Week. (For more information on Career Shadowing Week, contact the Blair County Chamber at 814-943-8151.)

Executive Roundtable to Hear Federal Reserve Presentation
The Blair County Chamber’s Executive Roundtable members will hear a presentation this Wednesday that will likely influence some of their decisions for 2020. Ryotaro Tashiro, Regional Economic Advisor for the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, will make that presentation and will cover a number of key issues. Among those issues will be: How has our economy performed so far in 2019? What are the challenges for 2020 and beyond? And how have Blair County and surrounding areas performed, relative to the rest of the state? “As of this summer, we are in the longest economic expansionary period in modern U.S. history,” Tashiro reports. “That makes for some interesting projections.” Denny Doll of Reliance Bank, who chairs the Executive Roundtable, is looking forward to hearing what Tashiro has to say. “The Federal Reserve Bank has an understanding of the economy base on data that is current and accurate,” Doll pointed out. “We’re delighted to have access to information that will drive many of our decisions during 2020. (For more information on the Executive Roundtable, contact Joe Hurd at 814-943-8151 or email him at jhurd@blairchamber.com.)

Chamber Board to Meet Thursday
The Board of Directors of the Blair County Chamber will meet on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. Among the agenda items for the meeting will be the approval of the 2020 Chamber Budget, approval of a slate of officers for 2020 as well as the approval of Public Policy goals for the upcoming year. For more information or to address the Board, contact Joe Hurd at (814) 943-8151 by Tuesday at noon.

Young Professionals to Assist Mountain Lion Back Pack Program
The Young Professionals of Blair County will be volunteering with the Mountain Lions Backpack program to stuff backpacks on this Thursday. If you would like to be part of that volunteer effort, call the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online. The Young Professionals of Blair County is a program of the Blair County Chamber.

Safety Series Will Focus on Value of Committees
As safety in the workplace takes-on even greater importance, it’s rare that any business attempts to address safety issues without the benefit of a safety committee. Just having a committee, however, doesn’t guarantee effectiveness or compliance. For that reason, the Safety Committee of the Blair County Chamber will hold a two-part series entitled, “How Much Value Does Your Safety Committee Deliver?” Part I will be held on November 22nd with registration and breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and the program itself from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30. The location is Hoss’s in Duncansville. Barb Smith from Teeter Group will be the presenter. Attendees will learn about: Safety Committee Structure, Certifying your safety committee in Pennsylvania, Operational functions and essential activities, Communication and record-keeping best practices, and Ways to increase safety awareness. Part II of the series will be held on December 16th – same times, same location. The presenter will be Tom Churbock of HSE Solutions. Attendees will learn about: Roles and responsibilities of the committee, Using systems and processes to break with tradition, and Doing a pulse check on your committee. The cost to attend each session is $20 for Chamber Members and $30 for non-members. To register for either or both, call the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register here for Part I. To register for Part II click here.

Missed the Informational Meeting on the French Riviera Trip?
Last week’s informational meeting on the Chamber’s trip to the French Riviera was well attended and included a large number of sign-ups.  Since the trip is limited to just 35 people, it may be a good idea to make a decision soon, even though the trip doesn’t take place until next Fall. The French Riviera Trip includes visits to Nice, St. Tropez, Monte Carlo, Cannes and Monaco. To obtain information, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151.
