Blair Business Mirror Hits the Streets Tomorrow The October issue of the Blair Business Mirror will be a supplement to Tuesday’s Altoona Mirror. The main feature in this issue will focus on the Future Farmers of America and what local schools are doing to promote agriculture through the FFA. Other features will include an interview with Lynn Lovell of SCORE and stories about two Chamber members doing exceptional things in the Blair County business community. State FFA President to Speak at Chamber Breakfast Club Casey Hall, State President of the Future Farmers of America, will be the keynote speaker at the next Chamber Breakfast Club, to be held on October 13th. Hall is a high school senior from Roaring Branch, PA in Bradford County. She plans to attend Penn State to major in Bioengineering with a concentration in Chemical Engineering. Her presentation at the Chamber Breakfast Club will focus on the responsibilities that all Blair County residents have to keep agriculture at the forefront of business activities. The Breakfast Club begins at 7:45 a.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park. The cost to attend is $16 for Chamber members and $30 for non-members. Business Hall of Fame Dinner Next Monday at the Convention Center The Chamber’s Annual Business Hall of Fame Dinner will be held next Monday night, October 17th, at the Blair County Convention Center. The event will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:45. The Business Hall of Fame inductees will be Mountain Research of Altoona, Tyrone Hospital of Tyrone and Veeder Root of Altoona. Altoona Shoe Company will be inducted into the Hall’s Heritage category. Those to be honored with awards of distinction are: Excellence in Small Business – The Burchfield Organization, Boyer Refrigeration Heating & Air Conditioning and Razor’s Edge Salon & Hair Loss Center; Young Emerging Business – PPCS Consulting, LLC, and Quantum Health & Wellness; Community Service – Keller Engineers, Penn State Altoona and YTI Career Institute; Safety – Altoona Pipe & Steel; Technology – Albemarle Corporation; and Committee Choice – Gloria Gates Foundation. Blair's Agricultural Heritage Topic of LBC Youth Session The Chamber’s Leadership Blair County Youth class will head to the Cove for its second session of the program year. That session, on Agricultural Heritage, will include visits to the Kulp Dairy Farm and Ritchey’s Dairy. The class will also discuss the Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens. GRYP "next" Leadership Conference Set for Friday “Managing Difficult Co-Workers” will be the topic of The Chamber’s Growth and Relationships of Young Professionals (GRYP) “next” Professional Leadership Conference to be held this Friday, October 14th from 8:15 a.m. to noon at the Ramada Altoona Conference Center. Speakers will be Dr. Chuck Kormanski who will talk on workplace personalities; Dr. Randy Frye who will address the need for generation gaps to work together; and keynote speaker Dulin Clark, who co-authored the PITA Principal. The cost to attend is just $30 per person and if three or more Chamber Members attend from the same business, the cost is reduced to $25 each. Breakfast and materials are included in the cost. When Disaster Strikes, Will You Be Ready? This month’s safety program will focus on emergency response. Having a plan in place is the first step to keeping employees safe in the midst of a crisis. To help us understand what that means, the first part of the program will review Albemarle’s disaster drill, an exercise focused on evaluating current response concepts, plans and capabilities. The second part of the program will take a look at Altoona’s EMA emergency notification system, its amazing capabilities and why the need for expansion. Tim Hileman, Deputy Fire Chief for the City of Altoona’s Fire Department will present on the subject and even offer a demonstration to those in attendance. The event will run from 7:45-9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 21st, at the Hampton Inn, Altoona. The cost is $15 for Chamber Members and $25 for non-members. Crawford to be Honored at Farm-City Dinner The Chamber will hold its annual Farm-City Dinner on Tuesday, October 25th beginning with a milk-punch reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by a family-style turkey dinner at 7:00. The event will be held at The Park at Morrisons Cove. Guest speaker will be Matt Meals, Deputy Secretary for Agriculture and Consumer Protection. Meals, from Cumberland County, is responsible for the Bureau of Animal Health, Horse and Harness Racing Commission, Pennsylvania Equine Toxicology Research Lab, Livestock Evaluation Center, state-owned farms and other agricultural initiatives. The highlight of the Farm-City Dinner is the presentation of the Agricultural Community Excellence (ACE) Award which this year will be presented to James Crawford of Sinking Valley. Crawford has been a staunch advocate for Blair County agriculture for many years and currently serves as chairman of the Altoona-Blair County Development Corporation’s Agriculture Committee. The cost to attend the Farm-City Dinner is $20-per-person and tickets can be purchased at The Chamber Office, online or from any Farm-City Committee member. Chamber Seeking Board of Director Nominations The Blair County Chamber is seeking nominations to its 2012 Board of Directors. Nominees must be a member of The Chamber in good standing.
