Chamber’s London Trip Meeting Tonight at Devorris Center
The Chamber’s growing reputation for providing great trips at reasonable prices to all parts of the globe will head to London at the end of October. And the special early sign-on discount has been extended until June 10th. The trip, priced at just $2,299/person (including airfare), is an opportunity that even the most experienced international travelers won’t be in a hurry to pass-up. The Chamber has partnered with Heritage Travel of Altoona and Chamber Discoveries in offering the trip. If you missed the initial informational meeting, there’s no reason to panic. Another informational meeting on the trip will be held tonight, June 3rd at 6:00 p.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. Stern to Meet With Legislative Action Committee
State Representative Jerry Stern will meet with The Chamber’s Legislative Action Committee on Thursday to update members on the status of the State Budget and to discuss hot-button issues that have major impact on business. Retiring Superintendent to Speak at Chamber Breakfast Club
Dr. Dennis Murray, who has served as Superintendent of the Altoona Area School District and Chief School Administrator of the Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center since 1984 will be the keynote speaker at the Blair County Chamber “Breakfast Club” on Thursday, June 13th, beginning at 7:45 a.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park. Dr. Murray will retire later this month. He has been a strong supporter of The Chamber during his years at Altoona, according to Chamber President Joe Hurd. “He has been a staunch advocate of our BASICS program, has been an active participant in our Executive Roundtable and has encouraged his staff to assist in whatever ways possible to maintain a strong connection between education and business.” The June Breakfast Club is sponsored by Keystone Business Support. Make Your Business Excellence Dinner Reservations Now!
The Chamber’s Annual Business Excellence Dinner, honoring Ben Stapelfeld of New Pig Corporation, will be held on Monday, June 17th at The Casino at Lakemont Park. The event begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:45. Among the highlights of this prestigious event will be a keynote address by Jack Fowler, Publisher of National Review. Reservations for the dinner can be made by calling The Chamber at 943-8151 or by registering online. Stapelfeld will be the twelfth recipient of the prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award for Business Excellence.” Previous recipients of the award are: Ernie Wissinger (2002), G. William Ward (2003), Stephen Sheetz (2004), Donald Devorris (2005), Willard Campbell (2006), John Wolf (2007), Lee Hite (2008), Donald Detwiler (2009), Michael McLanahan (2010), Barry Smith (2011) and Fred Imler (2012).

WE-LEaD “Lunch ‘n’ Learn” to Focus on Advance Directives
The Chamber’s Women Encouraging: Leadership, Education and Development (WE-LEaD) will hold a Lunch ‘n’ Learn program on Tuesday, June 18th from noon to 1:30 p.m. at The Blairmont Club. The title of the program will be, “The Ultimate Decisions: Who Will Make Yours?” Guest speaker will be Attorney Vicki Wertz – Hospital Attorney, Compliance/Privacy Officer at Altoona Regional Health System. Her presentation will focus on the importance of making health care decisions known to your loved ones, what considerations are involved, naming a substitute decision-maker and how to go about putting it in writing. The cost to attend is $22 for Chamber Members and $30 for non-members. To register, call The Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.

The Blair County Chamber recognizes the importance of supporting the men and women in our armed services. For that reason, The Chamber encourages its member businesses to support them as well. If your business would like to be part of an effort put forward by the Pennsylvania Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, contact Dale Hill at (814) 948-6322.
