The Blair Business Mirror hits the streets tomorrow as a supplement to the Altoona Mirror. The cover story of this issue highlights the many outstanding businesses that participated in Career Shadowing Week, making that event a tremendous success. Other stories include an LBC feature on new State Representative Judy Ward and a look at a local business – Home Helpers – that has helped its employees to secure quality health care through the Empower3 program. Copies of the Blair Business Mirror will be mailed to each Chamber-member business by the end of the week.
Chamber Blood Drive Set for January 14th
The Blair County Chamber and the American Red Cross will team-up to hold a blood drive this Wednesday, January 14th from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. Board of Directors Meeting to Include New Leadership
Carol Gensimore of Value Drug Company will oversee her first meeting as chair of The Chamber’s Board of Directors when the Board meets on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at the Devorris Center. Jerry Murray of UPMC Altoona, Sarrah Lyons of Mill Hill Farm Supply and Darin Tornatore of Keystone Environmental, Health & Safety Services are new Board members attending their first meetings.
LBC Adult Session Focuses on Economic Development
This Friday’s Leadership Blair County Adult session will take a hard look at economic development in Blair County. The session will include a presentation on “The Big Picture” by Pat Miller of ABCD Corporation and Lee Slusser of the City of Altoona and a panel discussion consisting of ABCD’s Marty Marasco, Susan Whisler of Southern Alleghenies Workforce Investment Board, Mark Ickes of Explore Altoona, Phil Kulp of Kulp Family Dairy and Carol Gensimore of Value Drug Company who is also chair of the Blair County Chamber’s Board of Directors. Safety Program to Feature Industrial Hygiene Expert
Industrial hygiene plays an important role in ensuring that the workplace, workers and the community are protected from hazards and potential health threats. Learn ways to minimize those risks at the next Blair County Chamber of Commerce safety program set for Friday, January 23rd, 7:30-9:30 a.m., at Hoss’s in Duncansville. The program will be presented by Bryan Seal, CIH, CSP from PA/OSHA Consultation. After earning his degree in Environmental Resource Management, Mr. Seal was commissioned back into the Navy as an industrial hygiene officer. He was stationed at the Iceland NATO facility and aboard the USS Enterprise. From 2005 until recently, he worked with Federal OSHA in New York and PA, and most recently at the OSHA National Office in Washington, D.C. Seal holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Health as well as multiple national certifications. The cost to attend the Safety Program is $20 for Chamber Members and $30 for non-members. Chamber Anticipating Large Annual Meeting Turnout
The Annual Meeting of the Blair County Chamber of Commerce will be held on January 30th beginning at 7:30 a.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park. A large turnout of members is expected as the organization swears-in its new Board of Directors and presents a number of awards to individuals for their accomplishments during 2014.

The Chamber will travel by motor coach to Charleston, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia and to Monticello from April 20-26 and spots are filling-up quickly. Lytle Group Conducting Manufacturing Comp and Benefits Survey
The Lytle Group will be conducting a compensation and benefits survey for the labor catchment area of Blair, Cambria, Huntingdon, Bedford, Fulton, and Centre Counties in January 2015. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevailing wage rates for 15 benchmark positions that are common to most manufacturing organizations. In addition, we will be gathering data on various benefits that are offered. The results from this survey will be summarized and all participants will receive a free copy of the respondent report.
