The Annual Meeting of the Blair County Chamber of Commerce was held last Friday at The Casino at Lakemont Park. Those receiving special awards at the event are: ATHENA Award – Blair County Commissioner Diane Meling, George Award – Merrill Hoover, Donna D. Gority Servant Leadership Award – Richard Fiore, Jr., Joseph P. Rosenhamer Chamber Spirit Award – Todd Lewis, and Small Business Person of the Year – John Muccitelli. Congratulations to all our award recipients.
Chamber Recognizes “All-Stars” for January
The Blair County Chamber’s ability to offer quality programming, events, recognition and advocacy efforts depends largely on the willingness of sponsors to step up to help underwrite the costs associated those efforts. So at the end of each month, we will publish a list of businesses or individuals who sponsored anything Chamber-related during the month. They have helped us to make a difference in the business community. Marketing is Focus of Best Practices Forum for Non-Profits
Like for-profit businesses, non-profits need to find clever (and inexpensive) ways to market their products and services. To help determine the most effective means of doing that, The Chamber’s Committee of Non-Profit Businesses will hold its quarterly Best Practices Forum on “How to Gain a Marketing Advantage.” The Forum will be held this Friday, February 6th at 8:15 a.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. Segan Smith of DiAndrea Media will present/facilitate the program. There is no charge to attend for non-profits that are Chamber Members but pre-registration is essential since space is limited. Informational Meeting for Presidents’ Forum Re-Scheduled (Again)
A scheduling conflict has made it necessary to re-schedule, for the second time, the informational meeting about The Chamber’s Presidents’ Forum program. The rescheduled date is now February 17th at 8:30 a.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. Anyone in a top administrative position at a Chamber-member business is invited to attend the meeting to learn more about the Presidents’ Forum. Registrations Being Accepted for Chamber’s “Five Rivers” Cruise
The Blair County Chamber is heading to Europe in late Fall for its first-ever river cruise. The cruise is being done in cooperation with Heritage Adventures Travel Agency. The special wine-themed “5-River European Cruise” will depart from the Chamber Office in the Devorris Center for Business Development on November 3rd, will fly from Dulles International Airport for an overnight flight to Prague and will return on November 13th from Paris. The trip will include one-night sightseeing stays at 5-star hotels in both Prague and Paris with the river cruise in-between. The Chamber trip will feature excursions on the Vistava, Main, Rhine, Moselle and Seine rivers via Avalon Waterways “Visionary,” considered the finest river vessel in Europe. The Visionary accommodates just 128 guests. The Chamber had originally planned a trip to Thailand and Hong Kong this Fall but has postponed that trip until at least next Spring. Brochures on the 5-River European Cruise will be available at the Chamber Office. A special informational meeting on the cruise will be held on February 17th at 6:00 p.m. at the Devorris Center. WE-LEaD Schedules Networking Event for Next Monday
The Blair County Chamber of Commerce WE-LEaD (Women Encouraging – Leadership, Education and Development) program will host a networking event on Mon., February 9th, from 5 - 7 p.m. at Marzoni’s in Duncansville, located at 165 Patchway Rd. The networking event, sponsored by Thompsons Pharmacy, will feature hot hors d’oeuvres and cold beverages. WE-LEaD is an innovative program of the Blair County Chamber of Commerce that provides networking and educational programs throughout the year. WE-LEaD focuses on issues that women in business typically face on a daily basis. The cost to attend is $20 for Chamber Members and $40 for non-members and includes two complimentary beverage tickets. To register, contact The Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.
Small Business Partners to Host Workshop on Millennials in the Workforce
The Blair County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Partners will host a workshop entitled “The Millennial Dilemma: How to Attract, Retain and Motivate our Young Professionals,” next Wednesday, February 11th, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., at the Devorris Center for Business Development. The workshop will be presented by Tina Welch of Welch Performance Consulting. The cost to attend the event is $5 for Chamber Members and $10 for non-members. Marcellus Shale is Topic of February’s Chamber Breakfast Club
Blair County hasn’t been a big player in the Marcellus Shale frenzy, at least from an excavation standpoint, but the impact of the shale gas industry may begin to hit closer to home as the process continues to evolve. How that evolution takes place, what the free-fall in oil prices may mean and what challenges and opportunities are on the horizon for Marcellus Shale will be the discussion points of the next Chamber “Breakfast Club,” set for February12th at 7:45 a.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park. James Ladlee, Associate Director of the Penn State Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research, will present, “Marcellus Shale: How Far Have We Come?” Ladlee has extensive experience teaching all aspects of oil and gas development ranging from shale economics to supply chain and drilling basics to environmental compliance. He also brings a strong background in community and economic development to social license questions and shale development opportunities. The cost to attend Breakfast Club is $18 for Chamber Members and $30 for non-members. A full buffet breakfast is included.
