Chamber Board Approves Minimum Wage Policy
The Blair County Chamber has followed the recommendation of its Public Policy Committee and issued a statement on the topic of minimum wage. The statement reads, “The Blair County Chamber of Commerce opposes mandated minimum wage targets and disincentives to work. Significant increases in the minimum wage jeopardize the ability of small businesses to hire and retain employees and, in many cases, to continue to operate.” The Chamber’s policy will be forwarded to elected officials at the state and federal level.

Three New Members Approved by Chamber Board
At its March 21st meeting, the Blair County Chamber Board of Directors approved the following new members: Lexington Clubhouse of Altoona, Power House Subs of Altoona and Zito Business of Coudersport, PA.

Chamber Discontinues “Buy Here Bucks” Program
A Chamber initiative created to encourage greater sales of products and services at local retailers and hospitality businesses has been discontinued. The “Buy Here Bucks” gift certificate program, which began a little more than a year ago, fell short of expectations both in terms of participation and financial viability. Anyone who has purchased “Buy Here Bucks” can still redeem them at the businesses that accept them (that list is on the Chamber Website at www.blairchamber.com) until midnight on May 24, 2019. For more information, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151.

Chamber Looking to Hire a Website & Social Media Specialist
The Blair County Chamber is looking to hire a staff person to handle website development and social media. The position is fulltime and features competitive salary and benefits. Interested persons should submit resume and cover letter to Joe Hurd at jhurd@blairchamber.com. The Blair County Chamber is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Special Interest Breakfast on Juuling Set for Tomorrow
The Blair County Chamber is holding a Special Interest Breakfast tomorrow, March 26th from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. at Park Hills Golf Club on “Juuling.” Dr. George Zlupko, M.D. will be the keynote speaker.  Dr. Zlupko will present “Juul is Definitely Not Cool!” The cost to attend this breakfast is $25 for all attendees. To register, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151. Corporate sponsor of the breakfast is Circle of Life.

Final Informational Meeting on Sicily Trip is Wednesday
The Blair County Chamber is headed to Sicily this Fall and there is still availability for anyone who would like to go along. Done in partnership with Epic Journeys, the Chamber’s trip to Sicily will leave October 18th and return on the 28th. The trip is officially dubbed “The Sicilain” and it includes visits to Palermo, Erice, Motya, Marsala, Agrigento, Piazza Armerina, Ragusa, Modica, Syracuse, Savoca and Taormina. The trip will also include a day in Zurich on the return trip. A final informational meeting on the Sicily trip will be held on Wednesday, March 27th at 6:00 p.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. Anyone interested in learning more about that trip is asked to register to attend by calling 943-8151. There is no cost or obligation to attend.

Chamber, ABCD to Collaborate on Second Hotel Summit

A second summit, to follow up on those ideas and strategies will take place this Wednesday beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. The event is open to hotel representatives only. For further information, contact Joe Hurd at (814) 943-8151 or email him at jhurd@blairchamber.com.
