Legislative Action
Committee to Invite Union Reps
The other side of the issue. That’s what The Chamber’s Legislative Action Committee will be hoping to learn when it extends invitations to the union representatives of the county’s seven public school districts to attend a meeting in late August. The committee last Monday completed its third meeting with local school
board presidents seeking ways that the business community can assist districts in meeting growing financial demands in the wake of looming budgetary cuts. “These meetings have been eye-opening to say the least,” reported Legislative Action Committee Chair Thad Will of M&T Bank. “But we understand that there’s another side to all of this and, in fairness, we need to hear both sides. Then
we can decide what our involvement will be.” For more information on this issue, contact Joe Hurd at 943-8151 or email him at jhurd@blairchamber.com.
Committee Visits With Municipalities to Continue
Members of The Chamber’s Legislative Action Committee have been on the agendas of seven Blair County municipal meetings and the hope is that all municipalities will have been visited by the end of the summer. “We want to send committee members to these meetings to let municipal officials know that we’re interested in having their involvement when we look at major issues affecting our county,” explained Thad Will
of M&T Bank who chairs the committee. “Only through this level of cooperation can we expect the type of changes to happen that will help Blair County to prosper.” So far, committee members have attended meetings in Allegheny Township, Antis Township, Duncansville Borough, Frankstown Township, Freedom Township, Juniata Township and Williamsburg Borough.
Chamber to Meet With Local Travel Agencies
The success of The Chamber’s upcoming trip to China has caused many of our members to petition us to offer trips to other destinations in future years. Rather than begin discussions with travel agencies in other parts of the country who cater trips to chamber members, Chamber President Joe Hurd will meet with representatives from local travel agencies on Tuesday. “We’d like to keep
the business here,” Hurd acknowledged. “We’re hoping that our own members can help us put together trips that are exciting and affordable so that everybody wins.” Hurd pointed to The Chamber’s buy-local campaign as the main impetus for calling local agencies together. “These people are our members and they invest in our county. We’ll
do everything we can to stay consistent with our local buying message.”
Leadership Blair County Application Deadline Thursday
The deadline for people interested in applying for the 2012 Leadership Blair County Adult program is this Thursday, June 30th. “We’re extremely fortunate that the success of the LBC program continues to yield a large number of applicants,” reported Judy Juda, The Chamber’s Vice-President of Programming & Membership Education who oversees both the LBC Youth and Adult programs. “We
expect that trend to continue and I would encourage anyone with an interest in LBC to apply as soon as possible.” For more information on

Hall of Fame Winners to be Announced Next Week
The judges have met and The Chamber is in the process of contacting businesses and organizations that will be honored at The Chamber’s 2011 Business Hall of Fame Dinner, set for October 17th at the Blair County Convention Center. Once all the contacts are made, The Chamber will announce the winners in next week’s Business Bulletin. “We had a strong showing of nominees
and that always makes the judging process more difficult,” admitted Judy Juda, The Chamber’s Vice-President of Programming & Membership Education. “We’re very pleased with the businesses that have been chosen and expect to have another great event.”
No Chamber Breakfast Club in July; August Date Changed
Just a reminder that there will be no Chamber Breakfast Club during the month of July. Small turnouts during the heart of the vacation season caused The Chamber to cancel its July Breakfast Club and curtail most of its committee meetings. The date of the August Breakfast Club has been changed to August 18th. More details later.
