Chamber Hires New Staff Member
Jessica Meck, recruiter at National Electronics Warranty (N.E.W.), has been hired by the Blair County Chamber as its Vice-President of Membership Services & Development.  Meck replaces Mike McMullen who resigned in June to accept a marketing position with Geisinger’s Children’s Miracle Network.  “We’re delighted to have Jess onboard,” remarked Chamber President Joe Hurd.  “She brings a wealth of experience and a high degree of enthusiasm to what is a critically important position to what we do.”  Meck is a graduate of Shippensburg University with a B.A. degree in Journalism.  She also has a Masters Degree in Human Resource Management from Saint Francis University .

Home & Garden Show Committee to Begin 2012 Planning

The 2012 Blair County Home & Garden Show won’t be held until March 2-4 but the Home & Garden Show Committee is already starting to look at ways to improve on the 2011 show.  “This year’s show got a lot of positive comments and our number of attendees increased from the previous year,” explained Stacy Hoover, The Chamber’s Vice-President of Events & Technology.  “But our committee believes that there’s a lot of potential to grow the event even further and we need to start the planning process early to make that happen.”  The committee, which is comprised of members from both The Chamber and the Blair-Bedford Builders Association, meets Tuesday at the Chamber Office.  “We’ve got a good committee but we welcome new members,” Hoover pointed out.  “Anyone interested can just show-up at 8:30 Tuesday morning or can contact me about future meeting dates.”  You can contact Hoover at 943-8151 or email her at shoover@blairchamber.com.

Higher Education to be Topic of Chamber Television Program

Severe cuts in state funding for higher education is just one of several factors that colleges in the region face as they look for new and better ways to meet the needs of area students.  What’s the strategy going forward?  That will be one key discussion point as The Chamber brings top educators together for its next “Issues” program which will tape August 23rd at the Altoona Public Access Studio.  The program will then run throughout September on the Public Access Channel.  “The Role of Higher Education in Regional Development” is the title of the hour-long program that will be moderated by WTAJ’s Carolyn Donaldson.  Panelists will be: Dr. Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry, Chancellor of Penn State Altoona; Dr. Wayne Powel, Provost of Saint Francis University; Dr. Walter Asonevich, President of Pennsylvania Highlands Community College; Dr. Thomas Kepple, President of Juniata College; and Dr. Thomas Foley, President of Mount Aloysius College.  Sponsorships for the program are available at just $150 each.  To sponsor, contact Joe Hurd at 943-8151 or email him at jhurd@blairchamber.com.

Nomination Process Begins for ACE Award
The Blair County Chamber’s Farm-City Committee has announced that nominations are now being accepted for the 20th Annual Agricultural Community Excellence (ACE) Award.  Activity and participation in Blair County community affairs and the promotion of Blair County agriculture are the criteria used for selection.  Nominations may be submitted by individuals, organizations, businesses, farm families and/or through self-nomination.  Nomination forms are being faxed today over The Chamber’s fax network and will also be a privilege page in the mailed copies of the July Blair Business Mirror.  Click here to secure a form.  For questions, contact The Chamber at 943-8151.

August “Breakfast Club” to Feature Dynamic Speaker, Topic

At its monthly Breakfast Club on August 18th at The Casino at Lakemont Park , The Chamber departs from its usual business-specific topics to focus attention on a growing problem primarily aimed at young people who spend considerable time on the internet.  Craig S. LeCadre of the State Attorney General’s Office, a frequent presenter at Leadership Blair County sessions, will present, “Sticks & Stones: Cyber Bullying.”  The often-graphic presentation is a must-attend for parents and educators.  The program itself runs a little longer than most Breakfast Club presentations so this one will begin at 7:30 a.m. and will conclude at 9:15.  Corporate sponsor for the Breakfast Club is MedExpress.  The cost to attend is $16 for Chamber Members and $30 for non-members.  To register, call The Chamber at 943-8151 or register online at www.blairchamber.com.

Residential electric program drops rate for summer months
Chamber Members who still haven't signed-up for a discounted residential electric program can still get a great deal. If you enroll in The Chamber’s Residential Energy Program through OnDemand Energy and are a Penelec customer, you can lock-in a special introductory summer price of 6.99 cents per kilowatt hour until the September 2011 meter-read date. That rate then adjusts to 7.25 cents until June 2013. With summer’s high temperatures and increased electric use, this is the perfect time to secure your home electric savings. To enroll, visit fes.com/chamberchoice and click “Select Savings Program” under Residential Electric Savings.

Chamber Committees Ramping-Up: Join Now!
While most Chamber committees take a hiatus during the summer months, most use the time to take stock of future goals and begin to recruit additional members to make themselves more effective.  If you’ve ever considered joining a Chamber committee, now is the perfect time.  Committee participation will connect you with some great people and will make your business knowledge more extensive.  For a list of Chamber committees, visit the Chamber Website at www.blairchamber.com.  To sign-up for one (or more), contact Joe Hurd at 943-8151 or email him at jhurd@blairchamber.com.
