The ALTOONA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, under the direction of Maestra Teresa Cheung, is excited to announce our 2019-20 Concert Season Programming. Our season theme is based on the convergence of some significant event Anniversaries. We will be commemorating the ending of WWI (1919), the 75th Anniversary of the Ending of WWII (1945), as well as the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989). Along with these three very important anniversaries, we will also be celebrating the 250th Birthday of our beloved Ludwig van Beethoven in 2020 (1770- 1827)! There is little doubt that extraordinary events provide the fertile ground for the creation of great art. As we contemplate on the meaning of life through a host of common human experiences, we come to appreciate how symphonic music touches us in such intimate ways. In this season, Beethoven, Elgar, Copland, Shostakovich, Brahms, Sibelius, Mozart, and Rachmaninov all eagerly await to share their stories with us. We will get to know their experiences with love, joy, heartbreak and strength in the comforting murmurs of the strings, the powerful soaring brass, the clear sound of the woodwinds, and the resolution of the percussion. Our 2019-20 Concert Season Line-up is as follows: CLASSICAL SERIES – Directed by Maestra Teresa Cheung Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 6:00pm, Music in the Burg, Canal Basin Park (Presented by: Hollidaysburg Area Arts Council FREE to the public) Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 7:30pm, The Gathering Storm, Historic Mishler Theatre (Featuring Sophie Shao on Cello) Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 7:30pm, Besieged, Hollidaysburg Senior High School Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 7:30pm, Home for the Holidays, Historic Mishler Theatre Saturday, March 21, 2020 at 7:30pm, The Voice of Deliverance, Calvary Baptist Church (Featuring Vocalists Emily Misch, Soprano; Evan Bravos, Baritone; IUP Concert Choir, Craig Denison, Assoc.
