Chamber Board Approves Signing Letter on Overtime Rule
The Blair County Chamber’s Board of Directors has decided to sign-on to a letter initiated by the United States Chamber of Commerce that opposes the Department of Labor’s proposed overtime rule.  The rule increases the current income threshold for exempt employees by 113% to $50,440/year.  Legislation to block this rule has been introduced in both the House and the Senate.  The U.S. Chamber’s letter will be sent to all members of Congress.

BASICS/Rotary Career Fair Set for Wednesday
Sophomores from ten area high schools will participate in the BASICS/Rotary Career Fair to be held on Wednesday at the Blair County Convention Center.  Nearly 100 industry sectors will be represented at the event, which is expected to attract nearly 1,200 students.  From 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., those students will be from Bellwood-Antis, Bishop Guilfoyle, Central, ,Glendale, Northern Bedford, Tyrone and Williamsburg.  From noon to 2:00 p.m., it will be Altoona, Claysburg-Kimmel and Hollidaysburg. Corporate sponsors of the Career Fair are: ARC Federal Credit Union, Reliance Bank, S&T Bank and Sheetz, Inc. Chamber Board Approves New Members
At its April 21st meeting, the Blair County Chamber’s Board of Directors approved the following new members to the organization: Blair School of Martial Arts, LLC of Altoona; Gittings Protective Security of Ebensburg; Grane Hospice Care and Home Health Care of Hollidaysburg; HealthCare First Credit Union of Johnstown; Holiday Inn Express & Suites of Duncansville; Innovative Technologies of Hollidaysburg; Luther Lawn Service of Duncansville; and Simpson-Temple United Parish of Altoona.
 

Amber Terrace Hosting Thursday’s “Business After Hours”
Join the Blair County Chamber of Commerce and Amber Terrace at Altoona Center for Nursing Care for a casino-themed Business After Hours complete with games, drinks and food this Thursday, April 28th. Business After Hours is held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. The cost to attend is $6 per Chamber Member pre-registered and $12 for non-members pre-registered.  To register, call the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.

LBC Adult Class to Tour Blair County Prison
As part of its session on Justice, the Leadership Blair County Adult Class will tour the Blair County Prison as a prelude to daylong presentations with local law enforcement officials on topics ranging from drug abuse to crime prevention.  The session will be held this Friday at Hoss’s Corporate Office in Duncansville.  For more information on Leadership Blair County, contact the Blair County Chamber at 943-8151 or visit the Chamber Website at www.blairchamber.com.

Still Availability for the Chamber’s Costa Rica Trip 
The Blair County Chamber’s Costa Rica Trip, from October 17-25, is a great opportunity to experience both the beach and the rain forest of that exotic Central American country. The cost is just $2,899 (double).  That cost includes ground transportation to and from the airport, round-trip air, air taxes and fees/surcharges, hotel transfers, 13 meals and a variety of tours.  There is also an array of optional tours and a 4-day, 3-night Jungle Adventure Post Tour Extension.  The Chamber is partnering with Classic Travel and Collette on this trip. Limited Spots Remain for Chamber Golf Classic
Only about a half dozen spots remain for the Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Chamber Golf Classic. The Classic will be held on Monday, May 9th at Iron Masters Country Club with a lunch/registration at 11:00 and tee off at Noon. If you are interested, contact Stacy Hoover at The Chamber, 943-8151. 
 

Power Card Offers: They’re Changing Every Day
The Chamber’s Power Card is now in the hands of nearly 30,000 Chamber members and the discounted offers are changing every day.  If you haven’t checked the Power Card list in awhile, you might want to do so. Some great offers have been added since you last looked.  And if you’re a Chamber member who still hasn’t received your Power Card, call us at 943-8151 and we’ll arrange to get a card to you.

Business Excellence Dinner Sponsorships Available
Marty Marasco, the President/CEO of Altoona-Blair County Development Corporation, will be the 15th recipient of the Chamber’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Business Excellence. The award will be presented at the Annual Business Excellence Dinner on June 13th at The Casino at Lakemont Park. Sponsorships for the dinner can be secured by calling Jessie Covert at the Chamber Office or by emailing her at jcovert@blairchamber.com.

Applications Available for the Next Leadership Blair County Youth Class
Applications are now available for the 2016-17 Leadership Blair County Youth Class. Those applications can be secured at the guidance office of area schools or by clicking here.
