Business Excellence Dinner Just Two Weeks Away
Marty Marasco, the President/CEO of Altoona-Blair County Development Corporation, will be the 15th recipient of the Chamber’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Business Excellence. The award will be presented at the Annual Business Excellence Dinner on June 13th at The Casino at Lakemont Park. The event will begin with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvre reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:45. The Mistress of Ceremonies will be Dr. Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry, chancellor of Penn State Altoona. Father Malachi Van Tassell, T.O.R., president of Saint Francis University, will offer the invocation. As part of the agenda for the evening, five-minute testimonials to the honoree will be provided by Tim Sissler, vice-chairman of the board at Reliance Bank; Dan Hoover, president/CEO of Roaring Spring Paper Products; and two of the Marasco children (still to be determined). The keynote speaker for the Business Excellence Dinner will be Scott Dunkelberger, Deputy Secretary, Office of Business Financing for the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. A longtime business associate of Marty Marasco’s, Dunkelberger oversees financing programs targeted to business development, infrastructure development and alternative energy development with over $2.5 billion in funds. To register for the Business Excellence Dinner, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online.

Informational Meeting is Tomorrow for Chamber’s Costa Rica Trip

The cost is just $2,899 (double). That cost includes ground transportation to and from the airport, round-trip air, air taxes and fees/surcharges, hotel transfers, 13 meals and a variety of tours. There is also an array of optional tours and a 4-day, 3-night Jungle Adventure Post Tour Extension. An informational meeting on the trip will be held tomorrow night, May 31st at 6:30 p.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. Anyone interested in attending should contact the Chamber at 943-8151. The Chamber is partnering with Classic Travel and Collette on this trip. Leadership Adult Class to Have Final Session
The final class session of the Chamber’s Leadership Blair County Adult program will take place this Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Park Hills Country Club. The session will feature feedback on the program’s content and process, will include “Prouds and Sorries” and will focus one final time on the essential element of servant leadership. The class will graduate on June 9th.

McKnight to Speak at Chamber “Breakfast Club”
Steve McKnight, who will take the helm of the Altoona-Blair County Development Corporation as its new President/CEO on July 1st will be the keynote speaker at the next Chamber “Breakfast Club,” set for June 9th at The Casino at Lakemont Park. The Breakfast Club begins at 7:45 a.m. McKnight will talk about his vision for the future of ABCD and the importance of economic development to the county and the region. As a former charter member of the Chamber’s GRYP (Growth and Relationships of Young Professionals) program, McKnight has placed a high priority on engaging young professionals in targeting areas of potential growth and helping to develop a vibrant quality of life for Blair County. He will address trends related to the impact of young professionals on the local economy. McKnight served as Director of Corporate Services and Government Affairs at ABCD from 2001 to 2007. He brings more than 24 years experience in “placed-based” economic development strategies, business expansion, retention and public policy experience. The cost of attending the Breakfast Club is $18 for Chamber Members and $30 for non-members. To register, call the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online. Corporate sponsor of the June Breakfast Club is M&T Bank.

Non-Profit “Best Practices” Forum Focuses on Board Development
What do you consider the key elements that every board must have?  How does one go about getting committed people to serve on boards? And how do you turn a stale board into champions? These questions and several others will be the topic of the next “Best Practices Forum” – Building an Effective Board – that will be held on Friday, June 10th from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. The format for the program will be a panel discussion featuring Allan Hancock of The Hancock Group, Tom Bradley of Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries, and a third panelist to be named.  There is no cost to attend this event for Chamber members although registration is required. Non-members may attend for $10. To register, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online.
