Business Excellence Dinner is Tonight at The Casino
Marty Marasco, the President/CEO of Altoona-Blair County Development Corporation, will be the 15th recipient of the Chamber’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Business Excellence. The award will be presented at the Annual Business Excellence Dinner tonight, June 13th, at The Casino at Lakemont Park. The event will begin with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvre reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:45. The Mistress of Ceremonies will be Dr. Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry, chancellor of Penn State Altoona. Father Malachi Van Tassell, T.O.R., president of Saint Francis University, will offer the invocation. As part of the agenda for the evening, five-minute testimonials to the honoree will be provided by Tim Sissler, chairman of the board at Reliance Bank; Dan Hoover, president/CEO of Roaring Spring Paper Products; Marasco children Marina Nartatez and Mart Marasco. The keynote speaker for the Business Excellence Dinner will be Scott Dunkelberger, Deputy Secretary, Office of Business Financing for the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. A longtime business associate of Marty Marasco’s, Dunkelberger oversees financing programs targeted to business development, infrastructure development and alternative energy development with over $2.5 billion in funds. Registration for the Business Excellence is closed.

Blair Business Mirror to Be Published Tuesday
The next issue of the Blair Business Mirror will hit the streets tomorrow as a supplement to the Altoona Mirror. A copy will be mailed to all Chamber-member businesses by the end of the week. In this issue, Ward Transport and Logistics will be the focus of the cover story.  Ward’s are noting the company’s 85th year in business. Inside features include a Q&A session with Jamie Van Buren of PennStress and features on Sarah Donley and Attorney Joel Seelye. For more information on the Blair Business Mirror, contact Joe Hurd at 943-8151 or email him at jhurd@blairchamber.com.

Business Hall of Fame Application Deadline is June 15th
The deadline for nominated businesses and organizations to submit applications for either the Business Hall of Fame or for one of the General Awards of Distinction is this Wednesday, June 15th. Don’t delay! Get those applications to the Chamber Office right away! 
 

Chamber Foundation Begins Solicitation for LBC Youth Sponsors
The Blair County Chamber Foundation has officially begun the process of soliciting sponsors to fund the 2017 Leadership Blair County Youth program. The program is completely funded through corporate and individual donations. Letters have been sent to past donors and to people who have expressed interest in the LBCY program. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor should contact Cindy Cessna at 943-8151 or email her at ccessna@blairchamber.com. The Blair County Chamber Foundation’s Board of Directors will meet this Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development.

Chamber Board Will Continue Its Look at Critical Issues
As its strategic planning process moves forward, the Blair County Chamber’s Board of Directors will begin to work in smaller subcommittees to address issues related to staffing, technology, event attendance and overall pricing of programs. The Board will not meet again after this Thursday’s meeting until September 15th. Any Chamber member who would like to address the Board on Thursday (7:30 a.m. at the Devorris Center), should contact Joe Hurd by Tuesday at noon at (814) 943-8151.
 

“Business Before Hours” Set for Community Foundation Office
The next Chamber “Business Before Hours” will be held this Friday, June 17th from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. at the Central Pennsylvania Community Foundation, 1330 Eleventh Avenue in Altoona. The event will allow attendees to network while enjoying a continental breakfast.  Information about the Community Foundation will be available. The Central Pennsylvania Community Foundation “is a catalyst in the community that encourages and effectively manages charitable giving.” Currently the Foundation manages 230 funds and three trusts.  It also administers the Nason Foundation. To date, the Foundation has provided $12 million in funds to more than 500 organizations and awarded more than 950 scholarships. There is no cost to Chamber members to attend Business Before Hours. Young Professionals “Night at the Curve” is June 30th
Young Professionals of Blair County will be having a YP Night at the Altoona Curve on June 30th. Cost to attend is $24 per person and includes a 2 hour catered Buffet (BBW ribs, hot dogs, hamburgers, marinated chicken breast, potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw, potato chips, cookies, beverages (soda and water) & $2 select 16 oz. beers. Application Process Continues for 2017 LBC Class
The Chamber’s Leadership Blair County program has officially opened the application process for the 2017 class. Anyone who would like to be considered for that class should pick up a copy of the LBC Application at the Chamber Office or download an application from the Chamber Website by clicking here. Only 24 people are selected for each class so submit your application today. Application deadline is June 30th.

Educational Program Scheduled on New Overtime Law
An area of particular concern to employers throughout the country is the new overtime law that will change the status of many employees as it pertains to exempt and non-exempt status. To explain the consequence of that law in greater detail, the Legislative Action Committee of the Blair County Chamber will present, “What the Department of Labor’s New Overtime Law Will Mean to Your Business or Organization,” The program is set for June 28th at 8:30 a.m. at Altoona Grand Hotel. The presenter will be Attorney Aimee Willett of Fanelli Willett Law Offices. The cost to attend is $20 for Chamber Members and $30 for non-members. A full breakfast is included in the registration beginning at 7:45 a.m. To register, call the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.
 
WE-LEaD to Hold Networking Event at Park Hills
The Blair County Chamber of Commerce WE-LEaD (Women Encouraging – Leadership, Education and Development) program will host a networking event on Tuesday., June 28, from 5 - 7 p.m. on the patio at Park Hills Golf Club. The networking event, sponsored by Seltzer Financial Strategies, will feature hot hors d’oeuvres and cold beverages. WE-LEaD is an innovative program of the Blair County Chamber of Commerce that provides networking and educational programs throughout the year. WE-LEaD focuses on issues that women in business typically face on a daily basis. The cost to attend is $20 for Chamber Members and $40 for non-members and includes two complimentary beverage tickets. To register, contact The Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.

“Wake Up to Wellness” to Highlight Corporate Challenge
The next Chamber “Wake Up to Wellness” program will be held on June 29th from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at Altoona Grand Hotel. The agenda will include a discussion on the benefits/outcomes of workplace wellness, a review of the Blair County Corporate Challenge and guidelines for participation in the 2017 Challenge and a look at upcoming workplace wellness activities in Blair County. The cost to attend is $10/person and a continental breakfast is included. The corporate sponsor of Wake Up to Wellness is Healthy Blair County Coalition. To register for the program, call the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.
 

Digital Advertising Seminar Free to Chamber Members
Businesses of all sizes in the Blair County Chamber membership are invited to participate in a free seminar on July 7th from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. entitled “How Targeting Digital Advertising Works.” The seminar will be held at Park Hills Golf Club in Altoona and will feature Jim Doty, General Manager of WJAC, as keynote speaker. The seminar includes breakfast.
