Blair Business Mirror to Be Published Tomorrow
The December issue of the Blair Business Mirror will be published tomorrow as an insert to the Altoona Mirror. This month’s edition will feature a cover story on the optometrists that are members of the Chamber. There are also features on the Corporate Wellness Challenge, Career Shadowing and Medical Marijuana. If you don’t get the Altoona Mirror, don’t despair. A copy of the Blair Business Mirror is direct mailed to each Chamber member business.

Chamber Board of Directors to Meet Thursday
The last meeting of the Blair County Chamber’s Board of Directors for 2016 will take place this Thursday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. The Board will bid farewell to Dr. Thomas Foley whose term on the Board expires at the end of the month. Foley is the only Board member with an expiring term. Any Chamber member who would like to address the Board should contact Joe Hurd by noon on Tuesday at 943-8151.

Nominations, Sponsorships Available for Chamber Annual Meeting
The Blair County Chamber will officially begin its business year on January 27th when it holds its Annual Meeting & Awards Presentation beginning at 7:30 a.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park. The event will take a reflective look at the organization’s accomplishments from 2016, will swear-in the 2017 Board of Directors and will present five special awards to individuals who played key roles in furthering the agenda of the business community last year. The awards that the Chamber will present on the 27th will be: The Athena Award, sponsored by First Commonwealth Bank; Donna D. Gority Servant Leader Award, sponsored by Reliance Bank; George Award, sponsored by Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries; Joseph P. Rosenhamer Chamber Spirit Award, sponsored by P. Joseph Lehman, Inc; and Small Business Person of the Year, sponsored by First National Bank.  Nomination forms for those awards are available at the Chamber Office and by clicking here. The deadline to nominate is January 2, 2017. There are also sponsorships available to businesses interested in supporting the Annual Meeting. For information on how to get your business’s name attached to a significant event at a reasonable price, call Jessie Covert at 943-8151 or email her at jcovert@blairchamber.com. Lastly, to reserve a seat at the Annual Meeting & Awards Presentation, call the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online. The cost to attend is $24/person which includes a full buffet breakfast.
 
Non-Profit “Best Practices” Forum is Wednesday
The Blair County Chamber of Commerce’s Committee of Non-Profit Businesses Best Practices Forum has been moved to this Wednesday, December 14th. The time remains from 8:15 – 9:30 a.m. as does the location – the Devorris Center for Business Development. The presentation is “Small Games of Chance” by Chris Burns, Liquor Enforcement Officer with the Pennsylvania State Police. This is a follow-up to the introduction presented in September. More details will be discussed and specific questions are encouraged. This event is free for Chamber members to attend and non-members are $10.00.

Young Professionals to Hold Trivia Night
The Chamber’s Young Professionals of Blair County will hold a “Networking Opportunity with Blair County Trivia” this Wednesday, December 14th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Railroad City Brewing Company, 1415 Eleventh Avenue in Altoona. Trivia is to begin at 5:30.  The cost to attend is $5.00/person. Payment must be made to the Chamber in advance or at the door. Billing is not available at this event. Keller Engineers to Host “Business After Hours”
The next Blair County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours will be held this Thursday, December 15th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Keller Engineers, located at 420 Allegheny Street, Hollidaysburg. Business After Hours is a networking event featuring food and door prizes. Cost to attend the After Hours is $6 per Chamber Member and $12 per Non-Member pre-registered. Safety Program Will Focus on Medical Marijuana Legalization
With the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania legalizing medical marijuana, what is the impact on the business community? That will be the topic of the next Chamber Safety Program, set for this Friday, December 16th at The Casino at Lakemont Park. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. and concludes at 11:00 a.m. The format of the program will be a panel discussion that will feature State Representative Judy Ward, Dr. Anthony Bartkowiak of UPMC, Attorney Brendan Moran of Beard Legal Group, Attorney Jill Lashay of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney and Jon McNally, EAP Manager with Norfolk Southern. The cost to attend the safety program will be $20 for Chamber members and $30 for non-members. A full breakfast is included. Members Invited to Submit Questions to Ask the Blair County Commissioners
The Blair County Commissioners will be the special guests at the January 12th Chamber “Breakfast Club.” Once again in 2017, the format will be Q&A with the questions being submitted by Chamber members and delivered by Cory Gehret, chair of the Chamber’s Public Policy Committee. If you have a question that you’d like to submit for consideration, please email it to jhurd@blairchamber.com by no later than December 30th. The cost to attend the Breakfast Club is $20 for Chamber members and $40 for non-members.  A full breakfast buffet is included in the cost. To register, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online. Chamber Trip to Spain Generating Great Interest
The Blair County Chamber, in cooperation with Epic Journeys, is heading to Spain from September 15-24, 2017. The trip includes visits to Madrid, Cordoba, Seville, Granada, Valencia and Barcelona.
