Chamber Office Closed for Martin Luther King Holiday

Young Professionals Hosting Event on Community Involvement
This Tuesday, January 17th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Slep Student Center at Penn State Altoona, the Young Professionals of Blair County will host “The Significance and Power of Being Involved in Your Community as a Young Professional.” The event will feature a panel discussion comprised of Michael Fiore of Leonard S. Fiore, Inc., Christie Jordan of DiVersity Salon & Spa and Joe Sheetz of Sheetz, Inc.  Corporate Sponsor of the event is PSECU. There is no cost to attend the YP event and light refreshments will be provided. Space, however, is limited so please register by contacting the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 register online
 
Executive Roundtable to Look at Challenges, Opportunities for 2017
What is the prognosis for Blair County Business during 2017?  That question will be the topic of discussion when the Chamber’s Executive Roundtable meets on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. at The Blairmont Club.  Roundtable members will have two minutes to identify what they believe will be the challenges and opportunities that their businesses and school districts will face during the next twelve months. Common themes will likely determine program presentations at future Roundtable meetings. For more information on the Executive Roundtable, contact Joe Hurd at 943-8151 or email him at jhurd@blairchamber.com.

Charlotte’s Trove to Host January “Business After Hours”
The next Blair County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours will be held Thursday, January 26th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Charlotte's Trove, located at 819 E. Main St., Roaring Spring. Business After Hours is a networking event featuring food and door prizes. Cost to attend the After Hours is $10 per Chamber Member and $20 per Non-Member. Chamber Board Meets Thursday Under New Leadership
Matt Stuckey of Stuckey Ford and Stuckey Subaru will be at the helm on Thursday as the Blair County Chamber’s Board of Directors has its first meeting of 2017. Stuckey replaces Carol Gensimore whose term as Board Chair expired in December. Gensimore remains on the Board as Immediate Past Chair. John Beyer II steps-in as Board Treasurer, Mike Grimm as Board Chair-Elect and Darin Tornatore, Sherri Stayer and Amy Mearkle as Division Vice-Presidents. To address the Chamber Board, please call Joe Hurd by noon on Tuesday at (814) 943-8151.

Diversity to Be Topic of Leadership Adult Session
The fourth session of the Chamber’s 2017 Leadership Blair County Adult Class will be held this Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park. The session will address issues of diversity in Blair County. For more information on Leadership Blair County, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or visit the Chamber Website at www.blairchamber.com.

Some Booths Still Available for Home & Garden Show
The Blair County Chamber of Commerce and the Blair Bedford Builders Association are accepting vendor booth reservations for the 47th annual Blair County Home & Garden Show to be held March 3, 4, & 5, 2017 at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona. Exhibitor booth space is now open for home and garden-related businesses interested in showcasing their products or services. The show is also accepting vendor applications for the Home Treasures room. Home Treasures offers a boutique-style setting that features home interior items, candles, spices, hand-crafted items, and much more. Chamber Membership Guide Advertising a Smart Marketing Idea
As the Blair County Chamber and Barash Media continue to put the final touches on the 2017 Chamber Membership Guide, there is still an opportunity for members to advertise in that publication. The Guide is mailed directly to all Chamber-member businesses as well as distributed throughout the local community so that advertisers will gain maximum exposure. More and more, people in Blair County are utilizing the Guide as a key resource in determining not only what they buy but whom they buy from. To access advertising information, click here.

Registrations Continue for Chamber Annual Meeting
The Blair County Chamber will officially begin its business year on January 27th when it holds its Annual Meeting & Awards Presentation beginning at 7:30 a.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park. The event will take a reflective look at the organization’s accomplishments from 2016, will swear-in the 2017 Board of Directors and will present five special awards to individuals who played key roles in furthering the agenda of the business community last year. The awards that the Chamber will present on the 27th will be: The Athena Award, sponsored by First Commonwealth Bank; Donna D. Gority Servant Leadership Award, sponsored by Reliance Bank; George Award, sponsored by Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries; Joseph P. Rosenhamer Chamber Spirit Award, sponsored by P. Joseph Lehman, Inc; and Small Business Person of the Year, sponsored by First National Bank. There are also sponsorships available to businesses interested in supporting the Annual Meeting. Safety Program to Address Injured Worker Process
“The Circle of Life for an Injured Worker – From Prevention, to Recognition, to Return-to-Work” will be the topic of the next Chamber safety program, set for January 31st from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Hoss’s in Duncansville. Guest speaker for the program will be Dr. Brian Dillon, PT, DPT, Facility Director/Staff Physical Therapist at PHOENIX Rehabilitation and Health Services. Dr. Dillon’s presentation will include: The importance of warm-up, hydration and the possible benefits to the employer of a post-offer screen; the importance of body mechanics/ergonomics along with recognizing “high injury” work stations; and the discussions surrounding an early return to work as well as treatment focus. The cost to attend is $20 for Chamber members and $30 for non-members. A buffet breakfast is included. To register, call the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.

February “Breakfast Club” to Feature U.S. Chamber Executive
The presidency of Donald Trump is likely to mean a variety of changes to American business. How those changes in Washington will likely play-out at the grassroots level in areas like Central Pennsylvania will be the topic of the next Blair County Chamber “Breakfast Club,” set for February 9th, beginning at 7:45 a.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park.  Ben Taylor, Executive Director of the U.S. Chamber’s Great Lakes Regional Office, will present, “Being Prepared for What Happens Next.”  To achieve the Chamber’s public policy goals, Taylor develops and maintains legislative, political, media, and grasstops resources throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Taylor leads the Chamber’s efforts to strengthen its relationships with members of Congress through member businesses, associations, and local and state chambers of commerce across the region. Before joining the Chamber in 2008, Taylor was a legislative assistant in former Congressman David Hobson’s (R-OH) Washington, D.C., office. He also served in various positions in Ohio state government. Taylor graduated magna cum laude from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and history. He currently resides in Chicago. The cost to attend the Breakfast Club is $20 for Chamber members and $40 for non-members.  A full breakfast buffet is included in the cost. To register, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online.
