Informational Meeting on China Trip is Wednesday
One of the most popular Blair County Chamber of Commerce trips will be back for a fifth time in 2018. The Chamber will travel to China from April 20-28, 2018 with Citslinc, the company that has offered trips through chambers of commerce since 1995. Last year more than 20,000 people traveled to China on trips sponsored by chambers in the United States and Canada. The trip features stays in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou – all in 4 and 5 star hotels. It includes three meals a day, deluxe bus tours, fluent English-speaking tour guides and entrance fees for all attractions. The price of $2,299/person includes bus transportation to and from Dulles Airport, roundtrip flight on either Air China or China Eastern Airlines, all accommodations and all meals. The Chamber will hold an informational meeting this Wednesday, May 10th at 5:30 p.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development about the trip. To register to attend that meeting, call The Chamber at 943-8151. There is no cost or obligation to attend.

Mount Aloysius President to speak at Thursday’s “Breakfast Club”
Dr. Thomas Foley, President of Mount Aloysius College, will be the keynote speaker at the next Blair County Chamber of Commerce “Breakfast Club,” set for this Thursday, May 11th at 7:45 a.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park. Dr. Foley’s presentation is entitled, “Workforce Development & Higher Education: The Common Ground.” As part of the Breakfast Club, the Chamber’s BASICS Committee will award students from local schools for some aspect of career excellence. Eighth grade students at three schools will receive awards for outstanding essays associated with career fairs and students from nine schools will receive awards for Outstanding Attendance. The cost to attend Breakfast Club is $20 for Chamber Members and $40 for non-members. A full buffet breakfast is included in the cost. To register, call the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online. Corporate sponsor of the May Breakfast Club is South Hills School of Business & Technology.

Family Services to host Friday’s “Business Before Hours”
The next Chamber “Business Before Hours” will be held this Friday, May 12th from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. at Family Services Inc. The event will be held in the brick building directly behind the Family Services main office at 2022 Broad Avenue in Altoona. “We’ll be showing-off our newly renovated conference room (in memory of Charlotte Morris) and will have staff on-hand from all five of our programs to explain what each program does,” explained Executive Director Lisa Hann. “People who attend can also enjoy some tasty breakfast items before they start their work day.” There is no cost for Chamber Members to attend. Non-members can attend for $10.00. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged to allow the hosting company to get an accurate food count. To register for the event, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online.

Chamber Safety Committee Featuring “Breakfast and Show”
In somewhat of a departure from its usual format for educational programming, the Blair County Chamber’s Safety Committee will be offering a “Breakfast and a Show” that will focus on different aspects of the Workers’ Compensation life cycle. Cleverly entitled, “As the Claim Turns,” this safety soap opera will be moderated by Barbara Hoover, Workers’ Comp Specialist at Teeter Group, who will highlight key points as the case unfolds from the point of injury through root cause analysis and preventative action steps. Local occupational health provider Allison Marinak from HealthForce and physical therapist Lori Seiler from Phoenix Rehab Altoona-Bellmeade Clinic will assist in the evaluation of the medical and return-to-work aspects of the claim. And the audience will assist the injured worker as witnesses to the injury. “It will be educational but also a whole lot of fun,” Hoover pointed out. The program will be held at Hoss’s in Duncansville from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. The cost to attend is $20 for Chamber Members and $30 for non-members. A buffet breakfast is included. To register, call the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.

Registrations Continue for Business Excellence Dinner
The Blair County Chamber’s Business Excellence Dinner, honoring Harry Sickler, takes place on Monday, June 12th at The Casino at Lakemont Park beginning with a reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:45. The agenda for the evening will consist of a trio of Sickler’s friends, business acquaintances and confidants sharing stories (5 minutes each) that speak to the quality and professionalism of the man. Those testimonials will come from Randy Tarpey, Sickler’s business partner at Sickler, Tarpey & Associates; former Tyrone Area School District Superintendent Dr. William Miller; and former State Agriculture Secretary Sam Hayes. There will also be a special tribute to Sickler and his many years of servant leadership. Jim Gregory will be master of ceremonies for the dinner. Father Jozef, pastor of Saint Matthew’s Parish in Tyrone, will do the invocation. Reservations are being accepted for the Business Excellence Dinner. Call The Chamber at 943-8151 to make those reservations or register online. Dinner sponsorships can also be secured by calling Jessie Covert at the Chamber Office or by emailing her at jcovert@blairchamber.com.

Congratulations . . .
. . . to Seth Smith of Hollidaysburg, who has been promoted to area executive and senior vice-president for Centre and Blair counties for AmeriServ Bank. Smith is co-chair of the Leadership Blair County Adult Committee.
