Chamber Office Closed for Veterans Day
The Blair County Chamber Office will be closed on Monday in recognition of Veterans Day. The office will re-open on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. To access Chamber information or to register for a program or event, visit the Chamber Website at www.blairchamber.com.

Chamber Young Professionals Holding Event Tomorrow in Downtown Altoona
Mark your calendar for the next Young Professionals event because you won’t want to miss it. The focus of the event tomorrow, November 13th is the Evolution of Downtown Altoona. Registration and light refreshments begin at 5:15 p.m. at the Hite Family LaunchBox for Innovation. Beginning at 5:30, there is a one-hour question and answer session with panelists; Altoona Mayor Matt Pacifico, Steve McKnight of ABCD Corp, and Sarah Vogel, owner of The Clay Cup.  Following the panel is a one-hour “business hop” where YPs have the chance to visit at least 10 different downtown businesses. At 7:30, there will be a basket raffle where attendees have the chance to win some great prizes donated by those participating businesses. To make a reservation, call the Chamber at 943-8151. Cost to attend is $5.00.
 

Leadership Youth to Visit Court House, Blair County Prison
The Chamber’s Leadership Blair County Youth class will have its “Justice” session on Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:40 p.m.  The session will feature a presentation on the importance of voting along with tours of both the Blair County Court House and the Blair County Prison. The class will also have a team building exercise based on “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens.” For more information on the Leadership Blair County Youth program, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or visit the Chamber Website.
 

Holiday Inn Express to Host Thursday’s “Business After Hours”
The next Blair County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours will be held on Thursday, November 15, from 5 -7 p.m., at Holiday Inn Express & Suites located at 115 Convention Center Drive, Altoona. The networking event will feature door prizes and a global cuisine with flavors from around the world. Cost to attend is $10 for Chamber Members and $20 for non-members. Reservations can be made by calling the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.
 
“Business Before Hours” is Friday at Farmer’s Insurance
This Friday, November 16th, Farmer’s Insurance – Debbie Eckenrode will host Business Before Hours at her office, located at 3614 Beale Avenue in Altoona. “We’re excited,” Eckenrode acknowledged. “We’re relatively new and want to get to know the neighborhood a little better. Our business is based heavily on connections so we’re looking forward to making some that day.” The Farmer’s event will feature tours of the facility, a yogurt bar and a variety of breakfast items.  Business Before Hours begins at 7:30 a.m. and concludes at 9:00.  There is no cost to attend for Chamber Members and non-members can attend for $10.00. Registration is important to allow the hosting business to get a sense of how many people to prepare food for. To register, call the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online.
 
Leadership Adult Class to Debate Controversial Issues
Each year, one of the highly-anticipated Leadership Blair County Adult sessions is Session#2 which features class members discussing and debating controversial issues. This Friday that session will be held at Trolley Works in Altoona. Among the issues being debated are: Shifting to a single waste hauler, appealing real estate taxes, and arming teachers in schools. For more information on Leadership Blair County, contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or visit the Chamber Website.
 

Chamber Board Meets Thursday to Approve 2019 Officers
The Blair County Chamber’s Board of Directors will meet on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at the Devorris Center. Among the agenda items will be the approval of the slate of officers for the 2019 calendar year. The board will also review last week’s retreat to set a strategy for the next several years. To address the board, please contact Joe Hurd by noon on Tuesday at (814) 943-8151.

Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) Seeking Mentors
The Chamber’s Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) program is seeking additional mentors for the current YEA! class. The commitment is one-hour each week for a six week period from December thru January. An orientation for mentors will be held on November 27th from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. Any business person willing to share his/her expertise with a group of creative young people should contact Joe Hurd at (814) 943-8151 or email him.
 

Corporate Wellness Challenge Orientation Set for November 20th
The Corporate Wellness Challenge, co-sponsored by the Workplace Wellness Committee of the Blair County Chamber and Healthy Blair County Coalition, will hold an orientation on November 20th from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. Any business that plans to participate in the 2019 Challenge is encouraged to attend.

Informational Meeting to Be Held for “Southern Sounds”
The first Blair County Chamber trip in 2019 – Southern Sounds – has already generated some early sign-ups and the next informational meeting on the trip will take place on November 28th at 6:00 p.m. at the Devorris Center for Business Development. From July 28th to August 4th, the Chamber and its partner – Heritage Travel – will head to New Orleans, then to Tupelo, onto Memphis and, finally Nashville before flying home. The trip includes a Mississippi River dinner cruise, a tour of Graceland and a visit to the Grand Ole Opry. The cost is just $2,575 (plus air). To register to attend this meeting, call the Chamber at (814) 943-8151.
 

Chamber, Penn State Altoona Once Again Partnering on Student Showcase
The Blair County Chamber is once again partnering on the Penn State Altoona Student Showcase, which will be held on December 7th at the Devorris Downtown Center. The event opens at 8:45 a.m. with a keynote address from George Sidney, President/CEO of McLanahan Corporation. Student presentations are from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Lunch will be provided at noon. Please RSVP to Judy Paul at 814-940-3400 or email to JAP24@psu.edu. There is no cost to attend.

Booths Available for 2019 Home & Garden Show
The Blair County Chamber of Commerce and the Blair Bedford Builders Association are accepting vendor booth reservations for the 49th annual Blair County Home & Garden Show to be held March 1, 2 & 3, 2019 at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona. Exhibitor booth space is now open for home and garden-related businesses interested in showcasing their products or services. The show is also accepting vendor applications for the Home Treasures room. Home Treasures offers a boutique-style setting that features home interior items, candles, spices, hand-crafted items, and much more. To reserve a booth or for more information, call Stacy Hoover at the Blair County Chamber of Commerce at 814-943-8151.
