Non-Profit Best Practices on Hiring Good Employees is This Friday
The Blair County Chamber Committee of Non-Profit Businesses will be holding a Best Practices workshop with a panel discussion, this Friday, September 6. The program is entitled "The Daunting Challenges of Hiring Good Employees” and will be held at the Devorris Center for Business Development, 3900 Industrial Park Drive, Altoona. The three panelists will be Jamie Miller - General Manager of Advantage Resource Group; Amanda Wright - Director of Operations for Spherion; and Joanna Skowron - Talent Acquisition Supervisor for Sheetz.  The program will be held from 8:15 - 9:45 a.m. Cost to attend is $10 for Chamber Members and $20 for non-members. To make a reservation, call the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.

Chamber Welcomes New Employee
The Blair County Chamber has hired a Graduate Assistant from Saint Francis University to oversee its social media and website responsibilities. Sarah Losing will work 29 hours-per-week at the Chamber for the next two years while she completes her studies toward a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. Losing graduated from Saint Francis in May with a B.S. in Business Management. She had previously earned an Associate Degree in Business Administration/Management/Marketing from South Hills School of Business & Technology. As the Chamber’s new Coordinator of Social Media and Website Development, Losing will work with Marketing Vice-President Linda Stotler to broaden the social media presence of the Chamber and to look for additional ways to generate revenue through the Chamber Website.

Dr. Gates Added as Speaker to Wake Up to Wellness
The Blair County Chamber’s Workplace Wellness Committee will hold a “Wake Up to Wellness” event on September 10th to unveil a new toolkit that the committee is developing to help employers implement wellness programs at their businesses. The event will begin at 8:00 a.m. at Jaffa Shrine Center. Speakers for the Wake Up to Wellness are Greg Drew, President of Value Drug Company, and Dr. Zane Gates of Empower3 Center for Health. The cost to attend is just $12 for Chamber Members and $15 for non-members. A healthy continental breakfast is included. To register for the event call the Chamber at 943-8151 or register online.

“Breakfast Club” to Feature Sustainable Pittsburgh Speakers
The Blair County business community is slowly beginning to understand the important role that sustainability plays in saving money and conserving resources. At the next Chamber “Breakfast Club,” set for September 12th at 7:45 a.m. at The Casino at Lakemont Park, that topic will be even more emphatically driven-home. Autumn Secrest and Jim Price from Sustainable Pittsburgh will present “Sustainability and Your Business.” With the assistance of Sustainable Pittsburgh, the Chamber’s Sustainable Blair County Committee put together a Sustainability Survey that businesses could complete to determine their strengths and weaknesses. The businesses that completed the survey will receive certificates at the Breakfast Club that correspond to their current level of accomplishment. Those businesses receiving certificates are: Great Commission School, Prime Sirloin, Roaring Spring Blank Book, Roaring Spring Library, Stiffler McGraw, U.S. Hotel, Veeder-Root, Advantage Resource Group and Keller Engineers. The cost to attend Breakfast Club is $20 for Chamber Members and $30 for non-members. To register to attend, call the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 or register online. Corporate sponsor of the September Breakfast Club is Gwin, Dobson & Foreman, Inc.

bizX Trade Show Booth Sales, Sponsorships Winding Down
The bizX trade show will be held at the Pegula Ice Arena on the Penn State Campus on September 26th. Subtitled, “Your Business. No Boundaries,” this year’s show will feature 79 exhibitors, a variety of seminars, a keynote luncheon as well as Corridor Cuisine. Reservations are required for the luncheon which will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will conclude at 1:00 p.m. when the show floor officially opens. Keynote speaker for the luncheon is author and sports executive Joe Battista.  The show will remain open until 5:00 p.m. Booth costs for this year’s bizX are $200 for small businesses, $300 for large businesses. The cost of attending the keynote luncheon remains $25. As expected the sponsorships filled-up quickly. Hospitality Asset Management will be the Presenting Sponsor; AmeriServ Bank is the Keynote Luncheon Sponsor and Your Cigar Den is the Seminar Sponsor. A few Supporting Sponsor opportunities are still available. Those who have already purchased those sponsorships are: Advantage Resource Group; First Commonwealth Bank; McCartney’s/Steelcase; Moore Power Sales; Okonak, Dean & Lechner, P.C.; Penn State Small Business Development Center; PSECU; Roberts Oxygen Company; The UPS Store – Altoona & State College and Zito Business. Chamber’s Great Britain Trip Accepting Sign-Ups
If you missed the recent informational meeting on the Blair County Chamber of Commerce’s Great Britain Trip, don’t despair. You can contact the Chamber at (814) 943-8151 and we’ll be happy to send you information. And there will be another informational meeting on the trip sometime this fall. The Chamber is doing the Great Britain Trip in cooperation with Epic Journeys from July 12-21, 2020. The excursion includes guided tours throughout England, Scotland and Wales including stops at Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Stonehenge and Edinburgh Castle. Ground transportation from Altoona is included in the tour. Space is limited so call the Chamber today!

Three 2020 Hosting Opportunities Available for “Business After Hours”
If your business has had difficulty hosting a Chamber “Business After Hours” in the past, your patience may be paying off. At the present time, three months are available in 2020. Those months are June, August and December. “We’ve been scheduled so far out in the past that a lot of businesses just gave up,” explained the Chamber’s Stacy Hoover. “Once the word is out about these 2020 dates, I expect them to fill quickly.” Anyone interested in hosting in one of those months should contact Hoover as soon as possible at (814) 943-8151.

Congratulations . . .
. . . to Leonard S. Fiore, Inc., which is celebrating its 65th anniversary during 2019.
. . . to Christopher Ringkamp, who was recently named President & CEO of the Independent Catholic Foundation, replacing William Hiergeist who retired.
. . . to Joseph Harford, President and founder of Reclamere, who recently received his Ph.D. in Workforce Education and Development from Penn State.

Correction:
In the last issue of the Business Bulletin we indicated that Conemaugh Nason Hospital was marking its 20th year with LifePoint Health.  Actually Conemaugh Nason has only been with LifePoint since 2015.  The notation was that Conemaugh Nason had made donations to Friendship Fire Company and Through, Inc. to recognize the 20th Anniversary of LifePoint Health.  We regret the error.
